Disney Swapped Out the Haunted Mansion's Stretching Room Ceiling After a Dirty Scrim Made the Hanging Corpse Disappear

Cleaning it was not enough. Disney has replaced the scrim ceiling in one of the Stretching Rooms at Magic Kingdom's Haunted Mansion, closing out nearly two weeks of confusion that started when guests looked up and could not find the hanging corpse.

WDW News Today reported the swap on Wednesday. Only the left room got a new scrim. "The scrim in the right Stretching Room has not been replaced," the outlet wrote. Back on July 24, the corpse was still clearly visible through that room's ceiling.

How the corpse dropped out of sight over a weekend

Magic Kingdom has two Stretching Rooms rather than one, which lets Cast Members keep loading guests toward the ride without adding to the wait. On Friday, July 24, WDW News Today noticed the hanging corpse was effectively missing from the left one. It was still plainly visible in the right one.

Disney's answer, relayed the same day, was that nothing had been taken down. The corpse was still up there. The scrim stretched across the ceiling had simply gotten too dirty for guests to see through it. WDW News Today brightened its own photos to make the point.

By Monday morning, July 27, the left scrim had been cleaned and the corpse was visible again. WDW News Today also reported that the room's lighting looked like it had been retuned to show off the ceiling. That looked like the end of it.

What is different about the new one

It was not the end of it. Nine days after the cleaning was reported, the whole scrim was gone. WDW News Today's read on why: "Though the scrim was then cleaned, Disney apparently decided it was best to replace it entirely."

The visible difference is depth. The new one adds shading to the triangle and octagon bands and to the space around them, where the old scrim read flat. One caution on the before and after photos: the colors look different between them, but WDW News Today notes that is only because the images were taken at different points in the pre-show.

The longer argument behind it

A dirty ceiling turned into a story because the corpse has been the subject of removal rumors for years, so some guests took the empty-looking ceiling as confirmation. Those rumors, and internal discussions at Disney, are driven by sensitivities around the topic of suicide.

Most of that discussion has centered on the Disneyland version of the ride rather than the Disney World one. In 2021, Imagineer Michele Hobbs, who led a refurbishment of the Disneyland Haunted Mansion, said of removing the body: "It's been discussed for sure. It's definitely something that we're thinking about." The rumor came back around with the 2024 Disneyland updates. The corpse was not removed, but Imagineer Kim Irvine said, "We're still looking at that. That one is complicated, structurally ... One thing at a time."

WDW News Today says Disney has since told it that the corpse's removal is not being considered anymore. The outlet separately notes that in the past the corpse has come down briefly for refurbishment while the Stretching Room kept operating as normal. Worth flagging that this is the outlet's own sourcing, not a public Disney statement. As WDW News Today put it on July 24, Disney "has not confirmed publicly one way or another."

One more thing this episode is not: it is separate from the exterior work. The scaffolding and most of the scrim that wrapped the outside of the mansion for about six months were down by July 31, when Blog Mickey photographed the revealed facade, and that outlet's February reporting described the project as a standard facade refresh, with no additions or changes to the Mansion and, contrary to rumor at the time, none to the Stretching Room. That was the building's skin. This was its ceiling.
