Lost Continent turned 27 yesterday (May 28, 2026), and 24 hours later, its biggest building is being torn open. Demolition of the Eighth Voyage of Sindbad Theater at Universal's Islands of Adventure is "in full swing," per Inside Universal's week-of-May-25 recap, picked up by Disney Dining and WDWNT Wednesday May 27. Aerial photos from this week show the 1999 opening-day building gutted, with a massive hole opened in the side of the structure. Memorial Day weekend guests are the first to get a direct look.

The headlines:

  • Sindbad Theater demolition is now active and visible from multiple Lost Continent vantage points.
  • The theater hosted The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad stunt show from Islands of Adventure's May 28, 1999 opening day until the show's permanent closure in 2018, a 19-year run.
  • Aerial photos show the building gutted with the exterior shell breached.
  • Lost Continent turned 27 yesterday, May 28, 2026.
  • Mythos Restaurant remains the last announced original Lost Continent attraction venue still operating, expected to stay open through 2027 per Disney Tourist Blog reporting. The status of original Lost Continent retail and service locations has not been individually disclosed by Universal.

What Universal has said

Universal's on-record statement on the broader Lost Continent activity, captured by Orlando ParkStop earlier this spring: "In the coming months, there will be construction activity in Lost Continent as part of site planning to ensure the area is ready for any future developments."

And Inside Universal's verbatim assessment this week: "Demolition of the Sindbad Theater in Lost Continent is in full swing."

Universal has not publicly announced what is replacing the land.

The Lost Continent timeline

  • May 28, 1999: Islands of Adventure opens. Lost Continent debuts as one of the park's six original islands, with The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad as a marquee attraction.
  • 2018: Eighth Voyage of Sindbad permanently closes after a 19-year run.
  • May 9, 2023: Poseidon's Fury gives its final shows.
  • Fall 2025: Universal files demolition permits for Lost Continent. The permit scope covers retail, show, attraction buildings, utilities, pedestrian facilities, and access roadway work.
  • May 15, 2026: The Mystic Fountain gives its final performances (we covered closure on May 17).
  • May 27, 2026: Inside Universal reports Sindbad Theater demolition "in full swing."
  • Now: Memorial Day weekend guests get the first direct look at the gutted building.
  • 2027 (per Disney Tourist Blog): Mythos Restaurant expected to close, ending the original Lost Continent footprint.

What the rumor mill says about replacement

Universal has not publicly named a replacement for Lost Continent. The strongest rumor mill candidates per Inside the Magic's and other outlets' speculation:

  • Pokemon. Universal Studios Japan has a Pokemon attraction in development; an Orlando version has been a top fan-speculation target for over a year.
  • The Legend of Zelda. Nintendo IP follow-up to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Epic Universe.
  • An expanded Wizarding World footprint. Lost Continent abuts Hogsmeade, making it the most natural physical expansion path for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

None of these are confirmed. Universal's formal language remains "site planning to ensure the area is ready for any future developments."

What's also happening this weekend

  • Hogwarts Always projection-mapping show returns tomorrow (Saturday May 30) at Hogwarts Castle (we covered Wednesday). One day out, the timing means visitors crossing the Lost Continent corridor will see active demolition on the way to the Hogsmeade entrance.
  • Butterbeer Season ends Sunday May 31, last weekend to grab the seasonal items.
  • Volcano Bay Nights runs Sunday May 31, the next scheduled date in the after-hours water park series that began May 3.

Quick planner notes

  • Lost Continent is now a transit corridor with active demolition. Construction walls limit the walkable footprint. Plan to walk through, not linger.
  • If you wanted to photograph the Sindbad facade, the time has effectively passed. Aerial photographers are the only way to see the broader demolition scope.
  • Mythos is still operating. If you have a Lost Continent dining nostalgia trip in your back pocket, the restaurant is still bookable through 2027 per Disney Tourist Blog's reporting.
  • The Memorial Day weekend timing is striking: Lost Continent's 27th anniversary Thursday, and Sindbad Theater being torn down Friday. Universal has not commented on the timing.
