Universal Confirms an Indoor Thrill Coaster for Epic Universe's Dark Universe, and Construction Is Already Underway

For months the clearest clues were in the dirt: a ride pit, a pile driver rising over the Frankenstein gate, and rows of concrete pilings behind Monsters Unchained. On Thursday, November 5, Universal finally said what is going in there. It is an all-new indoor coaster for Dark Universe at Epic Universe.

Universal Orlando's announcement is short on specifics but clear on the big ones. In its words, the ride is "an all-new indoor coaster coming to Dark Universe, one of the theme park's five extraordinary worlds."

What Universal actually confirmed

  • It is a coaster, and it is indoors. Universal calls it an "All-New Indoor Thrill Coaster" in the release headline.
  • Location: "next to the award-winning Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment."
  • Story: it "will immerse guests in an all-new story inspired by the iconic Universal Monsters franchise."
  • Timing: "Construction is already underway, with an opening planned in the years ahead."
  • Everything else: "More information about the all-new coaster coming to Dark Universe will be revealed at a later date."

That means no ride name, no featured monster and no opening year. Fans have floated a Bride of Frankenstein theme since at least September, and WDW News Today repeated the rumor Thursday while stressing "we don't yet know this for certain." Universal's own wording only promises an all-new story inspired by the Universal Monsters.

A setback for the boat ride rumor

When we covered the pile driver in September, the fan chatter had already been drifting from a Creature from the Black Lagoon boat ride toward an indoor coaster. Theme Park Insider noted that Universal gave no details beyond the announcement itself, and counts this as the park's fifth coaster. WDW News Today reads the announcement as confirmation the boat ride "won't be happening," though that is the outlet's reading, not something Universal said.

WDW News Today thinks indoors is the point. It calls capacity "an ongoing issue" for the park and suggests the boat ride lost out because the park "needs more indoor rides that won't close due to inclement weather."

Remember when "expanding" was a mistake?

Attractions Magazine has the backstory. On February 18, an NBCUniversal 100th anniversary article said the company's plans included "expanding Universal Epic Universe." Two days later, Universal told the magazine the wording was a mistake, and the word "expanding" came out of the article. Nearly nine months later, the expansion is official.

Once work started, the construction never really hid it. WDW News Today says site clearing in Dark Universe started in August, on an expansion pad behind Frankenstein Manor, and the concrete pilings we covered in late October already hinted at the outline of a show building.

Universal's busy pipeline

Universal used the same announcement to round up what else is coming "in the next year alone":

  • Universal Horror Make-Up Show featuring Blumhouse, "opening later this year" at Universal Studios Florida
  • Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, a Universal Studios Florida coaster due in 2027
  • A new sit-down signature restaurant in Jurassic Park at Universal Islands of Adventure, due in 2027
  • Luke Combs' Category 10 at Universal CityWalk, "slated to open" in late 2027

Epic Universe opened on May 22, 2025, and WDW News Today says this will be the park's first new ride. The announcement lands a little over 17 months after opening day. Now the guessing game moves from "what is it?" to "which monster?"
