Universal's Back to Hogwarts Celebration Runs August 1 to September 1 With a 25 Years of Magic Butterbeer Mug and a New Lug Bag Collection

Start with the mug. Universal's new limited-edition Butterbeer vessel is stamped "Harry Potter" above a "25 Years of Magic" wordmark framed by scroll flourishes, and it arrives with the celebration on August 1.

The dates themselves are not the news. Universal published its 2026 Wizarding World calendar back in February, and the August 1 to September 1 Back to Hogwarts window has been sitting on it ever since. What broke this week is what actually fills that window, and it came not from Universal's press room but from Warner Bros. Discovery, which issued a global Back to Hogwarts release Wednesday, July 22, from London, as it does every year.

Quick facts: Back to Hogwarts runs August 1 through September 1, 2026, at Universal Orlando Resort. The celebration marks the 25th anniversary year of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, which reached US theaters on November 16, 2001. The Butterbeer mug is limited edition and sold while supplies last. A new Build-A-Bag collection by Lug debuts at Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood, the only two destinations the release names for that collection.

A mug, a bag, and a bar of house colors

Warner Bros. Discovery's release is specific about the Orlando offer. Fans can expect "exclusive 25th anniversary experiences, including a limited-edition Butterbeer Mug (while supplies last), special food and beverage offerings, and the return of the fan-favourite Hogwarts Always castle projection show" in Hogsmeade.

The bigger merchandise story is the Build-A-Bag collection by Lug, the quilted-nylon travel brand. Per the release, "Both Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood will debut the new, park-exclusive Build-A-Bag collection by Lug, allowing fans to customise their own wizarding world-inspired look." The release names only those two resorts, and "park-exclusive" points to merchandise sold inside the parks rather than through general retail.

The product photography shows how "build a bag" works in practice. A black quilted shoulder bag carries a woven HOGWARTS strap and a gold H monogram above the word HOGWARTS, and it is surrounded by round zip pouches in all four house colors, a Golden Snitch pouch in gold, and a row of small house-tag charms. Pick a base, then add the house you are willing to defend in public.

One correction worth making

The release lists "the return of" Hogwarts Always among the Orlando offerings, and that phrasing has been repeated widely this week. It is worth flagging for anyone planning a trip around it: the castle projection show is not returning for Back to Hogwarts, because it already came back. Hogwarts Always resumed on May 30, after a hiatus while construction reshaped the area around the castle, and it has been running nightly at Hogsmeade ever since, weather permitting, on a loop roughly every 20 minutes from dusk to park close.

So it is part of the celebration, not a reveal. If you were holding an August trip specifically to catch it, you did not need to wait.

Where the celebration actually reaches

Universal Orlando now has three Wizarding Worlds, a change that dates to Epic Universe opening in May 2025. AllEars.net reports the celebration reaching all three lands: Hogsmeade at Universal Islands of Adventure, Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida, and Ministry of Magic at Universal Epic Universe. Universal's February calendar listed only the dates. Warner Bros. Discovery's release names only Hogsmeade. The 25th anniversary Butterbeer mug is being sold at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

Universal Studios Hollywood runs its own version of the celebration across the same August 1 to September 1 dates, adding an encounter with the Monster Book of Monsters plus house-pride giveaways and themed treats. Universal Studios Japan and Universal Beijing Resort are also participating, with Beijing debuting its own Hogwarts Always.

Worth keeping straight, since a lot of Wizarding World coverage runs together: the Hogwarts House Ice Lollies at Eternelle's Elixir of Refreshment are not new for this event. They arrived in January at $8.99 plus tax. The second-generation interactive wands are not new either; that line was already in the parks, and the April news was three added character wands (Voldemort, Sirius Black and Luna Lovegood), usable at spell locations in all three Orlando Wizarding Worlds. Universal has not yet detailed which specific food and drink items are exclusive to the August window.

All eight films are going back to theaters

The tie-in extends well past the parks. Per the release: "For a limited time, from 27th Aug through 3rd Sept, all eight Harry Potter films will be available in theatres worldwide, offering audiences a chance to relive the full cinematic journey. Tickets go on sale 31st July and are expected to vanish faster than a Golden Snitch."

The 12 minutes of never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage attaches to one title, not all eight. The release ties it specifically to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the 25th anniversary film. The "vanish faster than a Golden Snitch" line is the studio's own marketing, not a sales projection. The on-sale date, July 31, lands the day before Back to Hogwarts begins.

What we still do not know

Universal Orlando has not put out its own press release on any of this, and as of Thursday the resort's press room still lists FORTNITEMARES and Evil Dead Burn as its most recent items. That means no pricing on the mug, no pricing on the Lug collection, no menu for the "special food and beverage offerings," and no word on whether the mug comes with a refill deal like some previous Butterbeer vessels. The release also carries no quotes from any named executive.

With nine days to go, those blanks are still open. We will update this post if Universal fills them in.

More Scrim Comes Off the Haunted Mansion and the Facade Underneath Has Changed: Green Cupola, Darker Brick, Lighter Stone

After roughly six months behind scaffolding and scrim, Magic Kingdom's Haunted Mansion is starting to reappear, and it does not look the way it did before the work began. The cupola dome is green, the brick is noticeably darker, and the stone trim has been lightened, undoing the even-toned look the building had settled into by 2011. Disney has said nothing about the work, and one wall near the exit is still visibly half-finished.

The churro cart has already relocated near Frontier Trading Post, and WDW News Today counted two popcorn stands in new spots.
