Universal Designed the HHN 35 Sinners House Around One Scene First, and Its Show Director Says That Is Not Always How Houses Get Built

Universal put out a room by room account of its Sinners haunted house on Thursday, one day before Halloween Horror Nights 35 opens at Universal Studios Florida. It is the most detail the resort has released on the house since it announced it back in May.

The most interesting thing in it is not a room. It is the order the rooms were built in.

One scene came first, then everything around it

Ramon Paradoa, a show director with Universal Orlando's creative development group, told the resort's own blog that he and senior designer Manuel Cordero settled on how to stage a single sequence from the film, the surreal montage built around the song "I Lied to You," before they designed anything on either side of it.

"We started designing the scenes before it and after it, which isn't something we always do for our houses," Paradoa said.

That is a small sentence with a lot in it. Paradoa's phrasing implies the usual order runs the other way, laying out a route of rooms that escalate and then placing the big set pieces along it. What he is describing here is the reverse: pick the moment that has to land, then work outward until you have a house. It also tells you where Universal expects the house to peak, which is not something the event usually says in advance.

The route Universal described

Universal's account runs like this, and it tracks the film's chronology fairly closely:

• You start in the Clarksdale train station. Preacher Boy is on guitar and Delta Slim is on harmonica, both delivered through video effects rather than performers.
• Around the corner, the Smokestack twins, Smoke and Stack, are talking about the juke joint's opening night.
• The route breaks off to a remote farmhouse, where Remmick arrives and the first mass killing happens.
• You cross a cornfield with Remmick and his newly turned thralls behind you.
• You reach Club Juke on its opening night, with the chorus of "I Lied to You" audible outside before you go in.
• Inside, Preacher Boy performs while shadows hover above the stage, and the room goes up.
• The finale puts Remmick and his vampires into a burning, wrecked juke joint.

Cordero described the Club Juke build as an illusion of scale, saying the team designed it so that it "feels larger than it is." That is a standard scenic technique and not a new one, but it is a useful tell about the footprint. Houses at this event go into soundstages and tents with fixed square footage, and a designer volunteering that the centerpiece leans on forced perspective suggests the real room is smaller than the photos imply.

The song that did not want to be scary

Paradoa flagged one specific problem the team had to solve. "Rocky Road to Dublin," a driving track from the film, is not music that reads as horror, and he said as much. His fix, by his description, was to make the scares in that stretch heavy enough to work against the song rather than with it.

That is worth watching on opening night, because it is the one moment in the house where Universal has publicly admitted the source material fought back.

What Universal did not say

Three things are missing from the walkthrough, and all three matter to anyone planning a night.

No mention of the codename. In March, Blog Mickey pulled ten internal house codenames out of newly filed electrical permits, all of them transportation words: Shuttle, Wagon, Balloon, Car, Bus, Chariot, Train, Tractor, Hearse and Helicopter. A paid lights on tour last week matched three of them to houses, as we reported on August 24: Tractor was Hellraiser, Shuttle was INVASION: Alien Abduction, and Wagon was H.R. Bloodengutz. Train is still unclaimed, and Sinners now opens in a train station. That is a guess, not a confirmation, and Universal has not linked the two.

No word on the queue or the room count. Universal named six or seven distinct environments in its own writeup, which is a normal length, but it did not give a room count, a duration, or any indication of how the house handles the crowd it is likely to draw on a Friday.

Nothing about the surreal montage staging itself. Universal built the house around that scene and then declined to describe it, past saying that shadows of spirits hover above Preacher Boy while he performs. That looks deliberate.

Proximity Media weighed in on the build

The film's producers were involved beyond signing off. Proximity Media founders Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian said in a statement to Universal's blog that the Halloween Horror Nights team gave them "the opportunity to weigh in and collaborate directly" on the live version.

Direct filmmaker involvement is not automatic on licensed houses at this event, and it is the sort of thing that usually shows up in the details rather than on the marquee: which lines get reused, which shots get recreated at scale, which characters are allowed to be played for scares. Whether it produced a better house is an opening night question.

The basics: Halloween Horror Nights 35 runs 48 select nights at Universal Studios Florida, opening August 28 and closing November 1. It is a separately ticketed event that starts after the park's regular operating day. Sinners is one of ten houses on this year's lineup, and it was the second one Universal announced, back in May, after Jack & Oddfellow.

One practical note about the source: this walkthrough came from Universal's own blog, which is marketing, and the room descriptions are Universal's own. The set photos are real and so are the on the record quotes from the design team, but the house has not opened to the public yet. Treat the sequence above as the intended experience, not a review.
