Hellraiser Was Codenamed Tractor and Alien Abduction Was Shuttle: A Lights-On Tour Reveals How Universal Built Three HHN 35 Houses

Halloween Horror Nights houses get internal codenames while they are being built, and they tend to surface through paperwork rather than from Universal. This year they surfaced in March, when Blog Mickey reported ten of them from newly filed electrical permits covering buildings that have held houses before. The permits did not say which 2026 house went with which name. A paid, lights-on tour did, for three of them.

Inside Universal booked the tour and published its report on August 22. Universal sells it as a behind-the-scenes look at houses with the lights on; Inside Universal adds that no actors are working the rooms during the walkthrough. The three-house version covers Hellraiser, INVASION: Alien Abduction, and H.R. Bloodengutz Presents: A Halloween Fright-Tacular!

The codenames were all transportation

The transportation theme was already visible in those March permits. Blog Mickey's list ran to ten names, each attached to a building rather than to a 2026 house: Shuttle, Wagon, Balloon, Car, Bus, Chariot, Train, Tractor, Hearse and Helicopter. What the tour supplied, for three of the ten, was the house behind the name and the thinking behind it. According to Inside Universal, some of those links are a real stretch and some are not.

• Hellraiser was "Tractor." The link Inside Universal was given: a tractor is metal and runs on chains, and so, more or less, do the Cenobites.
• INVASION: Alien Abduction was "Shuttle." As in space shuttle. Inside Universal calls that one much more straightforward.
• H.R. Bloodengutz was "Wagon," a nod to the vehicle the jailed horror host breaks out of.

That third codename gives away a piece of the plot. Universal's own event overview has Larry Kurtzberg, better known as H.R. Bloodengutz, jailed after he tortured his crew when his show was canceled, the storyline that played out in HHN 21 back in 2011. He escapes from prison, returns to WKNB Television Station and takes it over for one final Halloween special. Universal's own blog names that 2011 house as H.R. Bloodengutz Presents: Holidays of Horror. Inside Universal's report calls it Holidays In Hell.

Who designed the Hellraiser maze

Inside Universal credits the house's design to Dylan Kollath. Its report describes the house as building out the franchise's Labyrinth and reaching for what it calls the "almost M.C. Escher-like" version of Hell in the films. It also says Kollath's usual signature is on show: sightlines that let you see into rooms you have not reached yet, which the site found disorienting.

The house draws on the first three films, weighted heavily toward the first two. It opens with Frank Cotton working at the puzzle box, carries on through his attic and, in Universal's own description of the route, the Channard Institute, before ending in the Cenobites' Labyrinth. Inside Universal describes an oversized Lament Configuration in that final stretch, chains bursting out of it, with Frank's mutilated body strung up among them.

Pinhead turns up throughout, though Inside Universal says he works mainly from raised platforms instead of jumping out of boo holes, which should make him loom rather than startle. Closer-range scares fall to Chatterer, Butterball and the "Female Cenobite." Inside Universal also reports appearances by Dr. Channard, The Engineer and J.P. Monroe.

The house the tour could not really show

INVASION: Alien Abduction comes with a caveat attached in the report. The story follows a family whose home is taken by an alien mothership and who choose to fight rather than submit, set in a Southwestern farmhouse. Inside Universal calls the house well designed, but says the farmhouse did not look like much with the house lights up, and is careful to add that this is not a criticism: an ordinary-looking home is the whole point, given what is meant to be happening inside it.

Much of the effect is meant to come from light, sound, projection and vibration underfoot, and the house was not running in show mode when Inside Universal walked it, so the site says it could not really judge that side of the house yet. Photography was a bit more restricted there than in the other two houses. The aliens themselves start from the familiar big-eyed "Gray" and sharpen it: harsher faces, clawed hands.

This year the scenic team is hiding snakes

The scenic team has a running habit of tucking one small creature into the houses for guests to find. Snails and frogs have had their turns, and lizards had 2025. The 2026 animal is the snake, though Inside Universal reports none had been placed in the houses yet at the time of its tour.

If you want to do the tour

Universal's full name for it is the Behind the Screams: Unmasking the Horror Tour. When tickets went on sale in March, Inside Universal listed the three-house tour from $99 and the six-house tour, which adds lunch, from $199. The three-house version started running August 21; the six-house version starts August 28. Everyone on the tour gets a lanyard plus a tour button, and the button differs between the two versions.

Halloween Horror Nights 35 runs 49 select nights from August 28 through November 1, 2026 at Universal Studios Florida. At the March on-sale, Inside Universal put single-night tickets in an $88 to $130 band depending on the date, with Express Passes from $170 and up to $280 on the busiest nights. Those figures are five months old, so check current pricing before booking.

One thing to keep in mind: these tours are deliberately unfinished. Inside Universal's own warning is that a lights-on, actor-free look "does not reflect the final look as show elements are missing or are not finished."
