Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure Loses Universal Express on July 1

Universal Orlando just rolled back one of the more controversial Express Pass experiments of the past year. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure at Universal's Islands of Adventure will no longer be part of the Universal Express program effective Wednesday, July 1, 2026. The ride had only joined Express roughly 13 months earlier, on Friday May 30, 2025. Universal announced the change today (Tuesday May 26, 2026) via its official X account, and pulled Hagrid's off the Express attraction list on universalorlando.com the same day.

The headlines:

  • Effective Wednesday July 1, 2026: Hagrid's is out of Universal Express, Universal Express Unlimited, and hotel-included Express benefits.
  • Hagrid's had joined Express on Friday May 30, 2025, the first time the ride had accepted Express since its June 13, 2019 opening at Islands of Adventure.
  • The Express era at Hagrid's lasted exactly 13 months and 1 day.
  • No refunds or compensation announced for Premier Annual Passholders or guests staying at the three on-site hotels that include Express benefits (Portofino Bay, Hard Rock Hotel, Royal Pacific Resort).
  • Single-rider line status post-July 1 has not been confirmed by Universal. Single rider was suspended in May 2025 when its old entrance was repurposed for the Express line, so a return is plausible but not announced.

What Universal said

The verbatim Universal statement, confirmed across Inside Universal, Fox 35 Orlando, and Laughing Place:

"We are implementing an operational update to Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. Effective July 1, 2026, the attraction will no longer be included in the Universal Express program, allowing us to improve the flow of the experience for all of our Guests."

The phrase "operational update" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. TouringPlans noted the move addresses low guest satisfaction in both standby and Express lanes, and Inside the Magic used the phrase "failed measures" in its headline. The honest read: adding Express at Hagrid's lengthened standby waits and frustrated guests in both lines, and Universal is reversing course.

Why Hagrid's never fit Express in the first place

Hagrid's is a multi-launch storytelling family coaster from Intamin, built for nuanced ride-system reasons more than raw throughput. Two seating styles (motorbike and sidecar), switch tracks, and a mid-course drop track all add capacity tax to the loading and dispatch process. Even on a perfect operations day, Hagrid's posts some of the longest standby waits in Islands of Adventure (regularly in the 70 to 120 minute range during busy seasons). Adding Express on top of that meant Express holders saw their queue get longer, and standby holders saw the line move slower because Express was eating dispatch slots.

Jurassic World VelociCoaster, the park's thrill-anchor coaster that opened in June 2021, currently averages around 67 minutes posted standby across the day per Disney Tourist Blog's tracking even with Express enabled (VelociCoaster joined Express in February 2023). With Hagrid's out as of July 1, the only Islands of Adventure attraction that won't accept Universal Express is Pteranodon Flyers, which uses a separate timed-return ticket system. So Hagrid's effectively becomes the only major coaster at Islands of Adventure without an Express option.

What this means if you have a July or later trip

Three practical things:

  • Premier Annual Passholders lose their after-4 p.m. Express perk at Hagrid's with no announced compensation. The Premier Pass after-4 benefit still applies to every other Express ride in the park.
  • On-site hotel guests at Portofino Bay, Hard Rock Hotel, and Royal Pacific Resort who get included Express benefits with their stay also lose the perk specifically at Hagrid's. Stays still include Express at every other eligible attraction.
  • Express Pass ticket buyers (roughly $120 to $360 per person depending on date for a one-time-use pass, more for Unlimited) lose a ride from their list. Universal has not announced a price reduction.

The 13-month Express timeline at Hagrid's

  • June 13, 2019: Hagrid's opens at Islands of Adventure. Express is not available.
  • February 2025: WDWNT reports a rumor that Express is preparing to come to Hagrid's.
  • Friday May 30, 2025: Express officially activates at Hagrid's for the first time.
  • Tuesday May 26, 2026 (today): Universal announces removal. Ride pulled from website Express list the same day.
  • Wednesday July 1, 2026: Express officially gone again.

Quick planner notes

  • Visiting before July 1? Express still works at Hagrid's through Tuesday June 30. If you have a Premier Pass, an on-site hotel stay with included Express, or a paid Express Pass, use it on Hagrid's before the cutoff if you want a guaranteed shorter line.
  • Visiting July 1 or after? Standby is your only confirmed option at Hagrid's, with single rider possibly returning. Plan rope drop or a late-evening visit. Hogsmeade opens with the rest of the park at rope drop, and Hagrid's standby is generally shortest during the first 30 to 45 minutes.
  • If you booked a hotel stay primarily for the Express benefit: it's still a useful perk for the rest of the park, but the Hagrid's carve-out is real. Universal has not commented on whether other coasters (Incredible Hulk, Jurassic World VelociCoaster) could see similar changes.
  • Watch for follow-up. Universal often quietly adjusts queue and operations details in the weeks before a major change. Single-rider availability post-July 1 is the next detail to confirm.
