Disney World Ends the Passholder, DVC and Disney Visa Discount on Bottled Water and Soda in Its Shops

The Passholder trick for cheaper cold drinks at Walt Disney World just stopped working.

For years, Annual Passholders could grab a bottle of soda or water from the fridge in a Disney gift shop and get their merchandise discount on it at the register. As of Tuesday, October 6, that is over. WDW News Today reports that Passholders "and other guests with merchandise discounts, including DVC and the Disney Visa card, can no longer apply that discount to bottled beverages at gift shops." The outlet says it "confirmed with multiple Cast Members."

When we rounded up Tuesday's price increases, bottled soda was one of the things that held its price, at $5.50 per WDW News Today. The shelf price of a soda did not move. What changed is who pays it.

How the discount worked

WDW News Today says Passholders "could use their 20% merchandise discount on bottled sodas, waters, etc. that they purchased at a Disney-owned store." Blog Mickey puts it more simply: Disney "didn't differentiate between a plush Mickey Mouse and a Powerade." Blog Mickey notes the same discount did not apply to bottled drinks bought outside the stores.

WDW News Today calls it a money-saving "hack" that spread by word of mouth before social media. Blog Mickey's writer says he used it on "countless late nights" at the Halloween and Christmas parties, ducking into the Emporium for a bottle while waiting for the parade.

For a Passholder with a 20% discount, the math is simple. A $5.50 bottle of soda used to ring up at $4.40. Now it rings up at $5.50.

The signs are already up

According to Blog Mickey, the discount has been "replaced by a sign that reads 'Discounts do not apply'," and Disney has put the signs on refrigerators around the resort. Blog Mickey calls the change "one of the biggest price increases in the recent round of price hikes on food and drink items," and reports that Passholders are not happy about it.

Neither outlet cites an announcement from Disney, and we could not find one. WDW News Today confirmed the change with Cast Members.

Also up on Tuesday: tours, dessert parties and GEO-82

The bottled drink change landed the same day as a round of increases on Disney World's add-on experiences. Here is what moved, per WDW News Today and WDWMagic.

  • Keys to the Kingdom, Magic Kingdom: $169 to $189 before, now $179 to $199
  • Savor the Savanna, Animal Kingdom: $199 to $209 before, now $209 to $219
  • Wild Africa Trek, Animal Kingdom: $229 to $239 before, now $239 to $249

The Seats & Sweets option at Tomorrowland Terrace went from $124 to $134 up to $129 to $144 for adults. Kids' prices did not change: $59 (ages 3 to 9) for the Pre-Party and Post-Party and $74 for Seats & Sweets.

GEO-82 Fireworks Experience (WDWMagic): the 21-and-up EPCOT experience "has moved from a flat $179 to date-based pricing, with tickets now ranging from $179 to $194 per person, plus tax and gratuity." Theme park admission is required and not included.

WDW News Today's roundup also notes that standard ear headbands went from $36.99 to $38.99.

Of everything that went up this week, which one stings most: $1.10 more on a bottle of Coke for Passholders, or $10 more on a tour?
