Universal Has Wanted a Flowering Demogorgon Since Its First Stranger Things House, and Halloween Horror Nights 35 Finally Has the Animatronics for It
Universal's creative team has wanted one specific effect in a Stranger Things haunted house since the very first one, and it took until this year to build it.
At a media preview panel on opening night, Michael Aiello, Senior Director of Entertainment Creative Development, and Lora Sauls, Assistant Director of Creative Development and Show Direction, broke down the Stranger Things 5 house at Halloween Horror Nights 35. Blog Mickey attended and published the panel breakdown Monday afternoon. According to Aiello, the team had wanted a fully flowering Demogorgon going back to that first house, and the effect was simply beyond what the event could build at the time. Animatronics closed the gap this year.

The biggest set at the whole event
By Sauls' account, no set piece at Halloween Horror Nights 35 is bigger than this house's MAC-Z room. A Demogorgon rides in on top of a moving Humvee, and turning left from there brings up the season five beat in which Will turns his power on a Demogorgon and pulls it apart, built around an animatronic that breaks apart.
The flowering Demogorgon is easy to miss. It sits in what Blog Mickey read as the Upside Down tunnels under the MAC-Z, and the outlet's advice is to look up after passing the ladder. Its writers only caught a glimpse on a first walk through.
Monsters over feelings, on purpose
Sauls said the team made a deliberate choice about what to adapt. A final season stacked with emotional payoffs could have been squeezed into a walkthrough about its characters. Instead the house is built around its creatures. Demogorgons and Demodogs are posted along the route, Vecna recurs across multiple rooms, and Sauls said the team drew on the season's bloodier stretches rather than its quiet ones.
Sauls also traced the lineage: a house built around season one, then seasons two and three folded into a single house, then Vecna arriving with season four, and now the final chapter. For Aiello, this one closes out a decade of Halloween Horror Nights working with Netflix.
What is actually in the house
It is a soundstage house, built in Soundstage 23. It opens in the Upside Down at Castle Byers, with Will Byers suspended overhead, then moves into a title card room where Vecna invites guests in with the line "We can begin".
From there it runs through the Wheeler house, where a Demogorgon pops out of the kitchen and Karen Wheeler answers it with a broken wine bottle. Then the Upside Down tunnels, Hawkins Memorial Hospital and its laundry room of Demodogs, a glowing portal into the MAC-Z showdown room, and the Hawkins National Laboratory, where a vision shows Hopper shooting Eleven in a sensory deprivation tank as water runs out of it. A hallway leads into the melting lab, then Dimension X, where the four boys look out toward the Mind Flayer and Pain Tree, and then inside the Pain Tree itself, where Vecna hangs overhead and Holly Wheeler tries to break free. After an Eleven and Vecna showdown, guests find Joyce Byers standing over Vecna with an axe. The house closes with Eleven disappearing into the collapsing Upside Down.

Not everyone is sold
Aiello connected the animatronic to a wider effort this year to put more ambitious physical effects into the event's houses, licensed and original alike. Haunted Attraction Network, ranking the houses separately and with no reference to that panel, was cooler on this one. It placed Stranger Things 5 eighth of 10, writing: "The weakest of the licensed houses. It feels like recycled material, without the new scares or ambitious sets the show could easily support."
The two accounts do not line up. Universal's pitch for the house is its physical effects, and the outlet that walked all 10 houses called the material recycled and faulted both the scares and the sets.

The event around it
Halloween Horror Nights 2026 opened Friday, August 28 at Universal Studios Florida, marking the event's 35th anniversary. Universal is running it for 49 select nights through November 1, with 10 new haunted houses. This year's framing is the Infernal Carnival of Nightmares, with Jack the Clown and Dr. Oddfellow as the ringmasters. Universal notes the whole thing started in 1991 with three nights and a single house, "Fright Nights."
Stranger Things 5 is one of five all new IP houses this year. Universal's June announcement described the house as developed in partnership with Netflix, saying it "will showcase the most gripping moments from the final season in an authentic, visceral experience that places guests at the center of the ultimate battle to save Hawkins."
