Animal Kingdom Scrapped Its Rope Drop Holding Area, So Everyone Can Walk Into Most Lands Early, Except Pandora

If you don't have Early Entry, your Animal Kingdom rope drop now lets you walk much deeper into the park. You still can't ride anything early.

Disney's Animal Kingdom has changed its rope drop procedures again, WDW News Today reported on Sunday morning, September 27. Guests are no longer held in the middle of Discovery Island before opening. Instead, they can walk into the park's lands ahead of the Early Entry start time.

The short version: Everyone can now head into most lands before the park opens. Only Early Entry resort guests can join an attraction line. Pandora, The World of Avatar is the exception, and non-resort guests cannot enter it at all until official opening.

How it works now

According to WDW News Today, the attraction lines are open only to guests with Early Entry. Cast Members stand at the entrance to each attraction and scan tickets to check whether a guest is staying at a Disney resort and has the benefit. Inside the Magic adds that the scan can be a MagicBand or a park ticket.

Everyone else can "line up near the entrance of the attraction or walk around the land until the park officially opens for all guests," WDW News Today reports. In practice, that means a guest without Early Entry can now wait at the entrance of their first ride outside Pandora, instead of back on Discovery Island.

The Pandora exception

Pandora works differently. Before opening, WDW News Today reports, the land is open only to resort hotel guests who have Early Entry. In the outlet's photo, it says, Early Entry hotel guests head to the left, while non-resort guests line up to the right.

Inside the Magic reports that everyone else waits at the bridge on Discovery Island and enters Pandora when the park officially opens. So if Avatar Flight of Passage or Na'vi River Journey is your first stop and you do not have Early Entry, the bridge is still your starting line.

Change number two since summer

This is the second shake-up of Animal Kingdom's morning routine since July. In July, WDW News Today reports, guests without Early Entry stopped waiting in the Oasis, the path just inside the main entrance, and were moved forward onto Discovery Island until the 8 a.m. opening. We covered that test in July, when Cast Members told WDW News Today they were not sure it would become permanent. Early Entry itself still applies. Inside the Magic notes that Animal Kingdom typically opens at 8 a.m., and Disney resort hotel guests get a 30-minute head start, which puts their entry at 7:30 a.m. on most days.

Is it permanent?

Disney has not announced anything. As of Sunday, there is no Disney Parks Blog post about the change, and the reporting comes from WDW News Today's visit on Sunday. WDW News Today describes the new procedure as adopted, while Inside the Magic calls it the latest step in "what appears to be a multi-month experiment." The July setup was also described as permanent, and it has now been replaced, so it is worth checking what Cast Members are doing on the day you go.

So, offsite rope droppers: is getting to stand at the ride entrance a real upgrade, or does it just move the crowd somewhere else?
