Disney Filed an Adventureland Permit That Runs Nearly Two Years, and the Contractor Specializes in Rockwork and Themed Structures

Adventureland now has a construction permit on file that does not expire until the end of August 2028.

Walt Disney World filed it on Monday, September 21, WDW News Today reports, and it names a contractor whose specialties include carving rockwork and aging structures. Disney has not said what the work is, and no work has been reported in the area so far.

What was filed

According to WDW News Today, the filing names MLC Theming, Inc. for "General Construction" at 4851 Caribbean Way. That address belongs to the Adventureland Popcorn Cart, which sits between Jungle Cruise and The Magic Carpets of Aladdin.

WDW News Today and WDWMagic are both careful about the address. WDW News Today says the permit "could be referencing the general area, not the popcorn cart specifically," and WDWMagic says the permit "could just as easily cover the surrounding area."

Why the date stands out

The permit expires on August 31, 2028. WDWMagic says most permits run about 12 months, and WDW News Today calls this one "almost one year longer than most permits."

The paperwork sends mixed signals about scale, though. WDWMagic reports that the filing's Notice of Commencement belongs to "WDI's Facilities Asset Management group," and that permits from that group "typically relate to maintenance and refurbishment work, rather than new additions." Its read is that the long window still "points to something more than a simple refresh or repair, even accounting for the fact that this looks to be maintenance-related work."

Who MLC Theming is

WDW News Today describes MLC's specialties as "scenic painting and aging of structures, fabricating facades, carving rock work," and says its portfolio is mostly rockwork and themed structures. WDWMagic calls it "a longtime Disney vendor known for themed area work throughout the parks."

MLC has appeared on several Walt Disney World permits this year. WDW News Today says MLC was listed on a Haunted Mansion permit in August, one that expires after the usual single year. It was also the contractor on the Tower of Terror permit at Hollywood Studios reported in early July, where scaffolding covered the whole front of the building by September 13, and on a January permit at the old Mike Fink Keel Boats landing site beside the Haunted Mansion.

A second permit nearby

This is the second Adventureland permit reported in less than a week. On September 16, WDWMagic reported a new permit for Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room, which appears on the same address map just to the upper left of the popcorn cart address.

WDWMagic reads that one as likely maintenance. It lists Disney's in-house Buena Vista Construction Company rather than Imagineering, and it had no end date, so WDWMagic says it defaults to the standard one-year expiration. WDWMagic also noted that "the Enchanted Tiki Room isn't listed for any refurbishment closure." Neither outlet connects the two filings.

What we know so far: a permit, a contractor, an address and an end date. In WDW News Today's words, "Official work for the area has not yet been announced or seen." We will keep watching for construction walls in the area.
