Magic Kingdom's Main Street Fire Engine Is Giving Rides Again, After Years Out of Service

Magic Kingdom's fire engine is back on the job, and the job is driving guests to the castle.

The red open-air engine from the Main Street firehouse is giving guests rides down Main Street, U.S.A. again, WDW News Today reported on the morning of Friday, October 23. It is the first time in several years that guests can climb aboard. According to WDW News Today, the engine has not been on display in the firehouse for at least three years, and it stopped carrying guests even earlier than that. Other Main Street vehicles continued to operate in the meantime, WDW News Today noted.

How to ride it

Board at the firehouse, which sits on the west side of Town Square, and the engine will carry you up the street to Cinderella Castle, where it lets guests off out front. Like the other vehicles on Main Street, it is a one-way trip. Disney's Main Street Vehicles page describes the rides as a "breezy, one-way drive down Main Street, U.S.A." and notes that the vehicles are not available during parade times.

Timing is the catch. The Main Street vehicles most often run in the mornings, so plan on it early in the day rather than on the walk out after fireworks. Disney has not published a schedule for the fire engine specifically, and WDW News Today did not say exactly when it started carrying guests again.

Look for No. 71

The engine is red with gold accents and has bench seating. "MAIN STREET FIRE DEPT." and "ENGINE No. 71" are lettered on the hood, and the number is a nod to 1971, the year Magic Kingdom opened.

When it is not out on the street, the engine should go back on display inside the firehouse, according to WDW News Today. So if you miss it out on the street, you may still be able to see it on display in the firehouse.

One of four ways down Main Street

Disney's Main Street Vehicles page invites guests to "Board a vintage horse-drawn trolley, omnibus, jitney or fire engine and enjoy the view as you are whisked from one end of Main Street, U.S.A. to the other." For the past few years, one of those four was not actually carrying guests. Now the fire engine is back in the rotation.

Disney has not made an announcement about the return that we could find.

Will you be lining up for the fire engine, or is the horse-drawn trolley still your ride down Main Street?
