Jeff Vahle Signed Off From Walt Disney World After 36 Years With a Thank You Letter to Central Florida

The man who ran Walt Disney World signed off with a thank you note. On Friday, July 31, Disney circulated a farewell message from resort president Jeff Vahle addressed to the Central Florida community, and it reads more like a neighbor writing a thank you note than an executive clearing out an office.

"As I begin my retirement, I want to thank you for your support over the years," Vahle wrote. "Walt Disney World and Central Florida go hand in hand, and I feel we have truly been partners in building a strong community."

Quick facts: Vahle retires after 36 years with The Walt Disney Company. He had been president of Walt Disney World since 2020. Joe Schott takes over next week.

Thirty-six years that started with an engineering job

Vahle joined Disney as an engineer at Magic Kingdom, according to WDW News Today, and worked his way to the top job at the resort. Along the way he led Disney Signature Experiences and Facilities and Operations Services for Disney theme parks worldwide, plus leadership roles tied to Disney California Adventure, Hong Kong Disneyland and Shanghai Disney Resort.

The scale of what he handed over is easy to underrate. His official Disney Experiences bio, quoted by WDW News Today, says that at the time of his retirement Vahle "oversees a workforce of approximately 80,000 cast members at four theme parks, more than 25 resort hotels, two water parks, a sports complex, a themed retail, dining and entertainment district."

The Instagram version, where he named his milestones

The letter went to the community. The Instagram post was the separate one, looking past Central Florida to the career itself, and it is where Vahle listed the projects he called milestones.

"On my final day as Walt Disney World president, I am reflecting on what a journey the past 36 years have been," he wrote. "I have been fortunate to work around the world and help bring new projects and parks to life, from opening Disney's Animal Kingdom to helping build Shanghai Disney Resort, supporting new growth for Disney Cruise Line and planning an exciting future for Walt Disney World. It truly has been the best job in the world."

Notice what is not on that list. No ride, no land, no single attraction. He closed instead on people: "Beyond those milestones, what I will remember most are the people and the memories we created together, the Cast Members, Guests and Central Florida community members who made every day so special. It has been a privilege and an honor to lead Walt Disney World, and I will carry this place and these memories with me always."

What opened on his watch

WDWMagic notes that Vahle led Walt Disney World through the opening of attractions including TRON Lightcycle / Run, Tiana's Bayou Adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana. That is two at Magic Kingdom and two at EPCOT, and it does not count the far larger slate now under construction.

Michael Hundgen, Vice President of Creative for the Walt Disney World Portfolio at Walt Disney Imagineering, put that part plainly in a LinkedIn tribute quoted by Blog Mickey. "As President of Walt Disney World he's been the enabler of our incredible line-up of Imagineering projects recently opened, being constructed, and in development," Hundgen wrote, closing with "Jeff, thanks for the leadership, mentorship, and stewardship of this special place!"

Joe Schott inherits Magic Kingdom's largest expansion

Vahle used the community letter to hand off directly. "You are in great hands with Joe Schott, who will begin leading Walt Disney World next week," he wrote. "Joe was raised right here in Orlando and understands just how special the relationship between our company and the community is."

Disney's own Disney Experiences profile for Schott settles the handover date, listing his title as "President, Walt Disney World Resort (Effective August 3, 2026)." Blog Mickey and WDW News Today both report that same August 3 date. WDWMagic says he officially becomes president on August 6, the one date that does not match Disney's own listing. Schott's own 40-year Disney career began as a Jungle Cruise Skipper at Magic Kingdom, per WDW News Today, and most recently he served as president of Disney Signature Experiences, overseeing the launch of Disney Cruise Line's new ships, the Disney Destiny and the Disney Adventure.

He walks into a full construction slate. WDWMagic reports Schott steps in while the resort continues the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom's history, alongside new lands in development at Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom.

He plans to stay involved in Central Florida

Vahle, who called himself a lifelong resident of Central Florida in the letter, said retirement will not end his involvement in the region. "While I may be retiring, I look forward to continuing to support the community that means so much to me and my family through board service and other opportunities," he wrote.

He ended the letter there: "Together, we have helped make Central Florida an incredible place to call home, and I know the very best is still ahead."
