Magic Kingdom's Train Is Running Again, and the Month-Long Closure's Biggest Job Was New Track at Main Street Station

Magic Kingdom's steam train beat its own deadline. The Walt Disney World Railroad started running again on Thursday, October 29, a day early. The operating hours Disney posted in August had it closed through that day, returning Friday, October 30.

WDWMagic reported the reopening Thursday afternoon: "The Walt Disney World Railroad reopened today at Magic Kingdom, one day earlier than Disney's original schedule." The train had been down since Monday, September 28.

What the closure was for

When the closure first appeared on Disney's calendar in late August, no one had a reason on the record. Disney had not given one, and neither WDWMagic nor Blog Mickey, the two outlets that spotted it, could say.

The answer turned up a few days in. On October 2, WDWMagic reported that crews had torn up the old rails at the Main Street, U.S.A. station so they could be replaced. Its reopening report sums the month up: "The biggest project during this closure was track replacement at the Main Street Station." The outlet explains why that stretch had to wait: the last time the railroad was refurbished, a parked train was on static display in the station, so the track there could not be swapped then. WDWMagic says this closure was Disney's chance to finish the job.

Same route as before

Do not expect the full grand circle tour. The train is back on the same shuttle route it has run since July 2025:

  • Main Street, U.S.A. station to Storybook Circus station in Fantasyland, and back
  • Frontierland station: still skipped
  • Full loop: still closed

The reason has not changed either. The Frontierland stretch of track cuts across the building site for the Cars and Disney Villains Land projects. According to WDWMagic, Disney has said the full loop will come back when those lands open, but has not given a date.

Do not trust the app just yet

One catch if you are heading to the park. As of Thursday, WDWMagic noted that "The railroad is still listed as closed in My Disney Experience, but the train is running." Its advice is to ask a cast member at the station, or just look for the train on Main Street.

The train missed Magic Kingdom's 55th anniversary on October 1, but it is back in time for the holiday season. Will you hop on for the shuttle, or are you holding out for the full loop once Frontierland's new lands open?
