Disney World Will Host the Warrior Games for a Third Time in August 2027, and Pickleball Joins the Lineup

Disney will host the Department of Defense Warrior Games at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in August 2027, the third time the military adaptive sports competition has been staged at Walt Disney World. Disney announced the return Friday in a Disney Parks Blog post, following a press event and pickleball demonstration at the sports complex.

The basics: August 2027 at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Nearly 200 wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans. Twelve adaptive sports. Five teams representing the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard, Air Force and Space Force, and Special Operations Command. Disney previously hosted the Games in 2022 and 2024.

Disney gave a month, not a date range

Disney's announcement commits only to August 2027. Outlets reporting from Friday's press event, including LaughingPlace and WDWMagic, have put the window at August 7 to 14, 2027.

That range lines up with the Warrior Games' own site, which describes the 2027 edition as 12 adaptive sports over 8 days and says the event schedule will not be posted until closer to the Games. August 7 through August 14 is exactly 8 days, and in 2027 it runs Saturday to Saturday. We are still separating the two, because neither Disney nor the Warrior Games organization has published a date range directly. Treat August 7 to 14 as well supported rather than official.

Pickleball is the addition

The 2027 sports are archery, cycling, field events, indoor rowing, pickleball, powerlifting, precision air, sitting volleyball, swimming, track, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby.

The 2024 Games at the same complex ran 11 sports, and pickleball was not one of them. It is the only genuinely new event on the 2027 list, which is presumably why Friday's press event was built around a pickleball demonstration.

Why 2027 was Disney's to take

The Army, which runs the Games, laid out its host calendar in August 2024: Colorado Springs in 2025, then San Antonio in 2026 and again in 2028. The odd year in the middle was the one left unassigned. Walt Disney World now fills it, which puts the Games in Central Florida in 2027 between San Antonio hosting years on either side.

The 2027 edition also lands 17 years after the first Warrior Games in 2010.

What the last two Disney editions looked like

The 2024 Games ran June 21 to 30 across 11 sports, with more than 200 competitors, and were open to the public. The Australian Defence Force sent 30 athletes.

The 2022 Games were larger, with nearly 300 participants including athletes from allied nations, and included a parade through Magic Kingdom.

Two things stand out against the 2027 announcement. The Games are moving from late June to August, which is a meaningfully different month for anyone planning to travel and watch. And the field, described as nearly 200, sits in the same range as 2024 and below the nearly 300 who competed in 2022.

What Disney did not say

  • Spectator access or cost. The 2024 Games at this venue were open to the public. Disney's 2027 post says nothing about tickets, admission or whether events will be free to watch.
  • Whether allied nations return. The 2027 description lists the five United States service teams and stops there. Australia competed in 2024 and Canada in 2022. That is an omission worth watching, not a decision anyone has announced.
  • Whether the theme park moments come back. The 2022 Games included a Magic Kingdom parade and the 2024 Games had a welcome event in the park. Neither is confirmed for 2027.
  • Broadcast plans. There is no mention of ESPN coverage, despite the name on the complex.

If you are planning around it

Nothing here changes a 2026 trip. For 2027, the practical read is that a week in early to mid August will put a few hundred athletes, coaches, families and staff into Disney-area hotel rooms during a stretch that typically runs softer than July, and it will occupy ESPN Wide World of Sports. Crowd impact at the theme parks from events at the complex is usually small. Hotel availability at the value and moderate resorts is the more likely pressure point.

Disney says more details are coming. The date range, the competition schedule and any spectator information are the three things still outstanding.
