The Walt Disney World Railroad Closes for a Month on September 28, Which Means It Will Be Shut on Magic Kingdom's 55th Anniversary
Magic Kingdom's railroad is about to stop running altogether. Walt Disney World has the Walt Disney World Railroad listed as closed from Monday, September 28 through Thursday, October 29, with operating times not resuming until Friday, October 30. That is 32 days without a train.
The closure surfaced without any announcement from Disney. WDWMagic reported Monday morning that the railroad "has been added to Magic Kingdom's refurbishment calendar." Blog Mickey found the same gap in the operating hours posted on the Walt Disney World website. Neither found a reason, because Disney has not given one.

Why the date matters
Magic Kingdom opened on October 1, 1971, and the Walt Disney World Railroad opened with it. That makes Thursday, October 1, 2026 the park's 55th anniversary, and it falls squarely inside the closure window. The train that opened with the park in 1971 will be sitting still on the day the park turns 55.
The train was already running on half power
This is not a full strength attraction going dark. The train gave up its complete circuit of the park on July 7, 2025, once work began on the Cars expansion of Frontierland and Disney Villains Land. What has run since is a shuttle: Main Street, U.S.A. to the Storybook Circus stop in Fantasyland and back, roughly five minutes in each direction. Frontierland gets skipped, because the track there passes straight through the construction site.
The same day the shuttle route started, Disney added a Stitch themed audio track. Stitch narrates the run from Main Street to Fantasyland, and the return trip keeps the standard conductor narration.
So the September closure does not pause the full railroad experience. It pauses what was left of it.

Nobody knows why, including the outlets that found it
Both outlets were explicit about the gap in the record. WDWMagic wrote that "Disney has not said why the railroad is closing this time." Blog Mickey put it at more length, saying it "remains unclear why the railroad needs to close entirely" and that Walt Disney World "has not said whether the closure relates to the nearby construction, mechanical work, or something else."
Blog Mickey also offered its own read on what comes after: "We think it's very likely that the train will resume shuttle mode when it returns." That is the outlet's expectation, not a Disney statement.
WDWMagic reports one thing Disney has said: the full loop comes back once the new lands open. No date has been attached to that either.
There is precedent, and it is not short
The railroad has taken long closures before. WDWMagic dates an earlier railroad closure, during the building of TRON Lightcycle / Run, at close to four years. Against that, 32 days is short. WDWMagic writes that the shuttle setup "is expected to stay in place for the length of the Cars and Villains Land construction, which is a multi-year project."

What it means if you are visiting
If you are at Magic Kingdom between September 28 and October 29, do not plan on the train, including as a way to move between Main Street and Storybook Circus. That five minute shuttle has been the only way to ride between those two stations, and for those 32 days walking is the only option.
If you want to ride before it goes, the last scheduled day is Sunday, September 27.
