Imagineers building the new Carousel of Progress will talk about it October 4, and D23 tickets go on sale Friday

Disney has already laid out the big strokes of the reimagined Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress: a late spring 2027 reopening, Bryan Cranston and Jamie Lee Curtis voicing mom and dad, and four acts running from summer 1969 to a finale set in the future. On October 4 the Imagineers working on those new scenes take a Florida stage alongside the Walt Disney Archives, and D23 says they will "share a bit of the magic to come."

D23 has announced D23 Spotlight Series: 55 Magical Years of Storytelling, a ticketed evening event at Disney's Contemporary Resort on Sunday, October 4, marking both the 55th anniversary of Walt Disney World and the Walt Disney: 125 Years of Inspiration celebration. Tickets go on sale Friday, August 28 at 10 a.m. Pacific and 1 p.m. Eastern.

The Carousel of Progress half is the news

The Walt Disney Archives portion of the panel walks through the history of the attraction, but the forward-looking part is the reason to pay attention. Per D23's own description, archivists and Imagineers "will unveil fascinating stories and discoveries, as well as newly acquired treasures added to the Archives' collection during the attraction's ongoing refurbishment," and then this:

"Imagineers working on the newest additions to the Carousel of Progress will also join to reveal their own storytelling inspirations and share a bit of the magic to come to the attraction!"

Disney announced the shape of the new show on stage at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event on August 15, confirming the 2027 reopening window, an opening scene built around an Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney, and acts set in summer 1969, on Halloween night 1985, on New Year's Eve 1999, and in the future. That reveal came off the showcase stage, with host Neil Patrick Harris delivering the reopening date. October 4 hands the microphone to the Archives and to Imagineers working on the new scenes. Imagineers revealed at that same D23 event, per WDW News Today, that Disney Legend Bob Gurr is consulting on the project. Gurr led the team that developed the original rotating carousel theater alongside Roger E. Broggie.

Joe Rohde opens the night

The evening starts with Disney Legend Joe Rohde, who D23 says will "share insights into the power of storytelling and reflect on highlights from his 40-year legacy with Walt Disney Imagineering." Rohde led the creative team behind Disney's Animal Kingdom and later Pandora, The World of Avatar, and he retired from Walt Disney Imagineering in 2021.

What the two tickets get you

• Panel Only, $59 plus a $3 processing fee: the panel itself, running 6 p.m. to roughly 7:30 p.m., plus the event pin. Check-in opens at 5:15 p.m. at the second-floor registration desk.
• VIP, $159 plus a $3 processing fee: everything above, plus a dessert reception at the West Rotunda outside the Contemporary from 8 to 9 p.m., two character meet and greets during that reception, fireworks viewing from the resort at 9 p.m., and a coupon package from select Disney Springs partners. VIP check-in opens at 4:45 p.m.

The fine print worth knowing before Friday

D23 Gold and General Members can reserve for themselves and up to three guests. Tickets are non-transferable and named at purchase, and the member and each guest over 18 may be asked for a valid government issued ID matching the name on the ticket. The event is for ages 13 and up, and anyone under 18 needs a ticketed parent or legal guardian along. Members also have to show a D23 membership card, physical or digital, at check-in. Parts of the night are outdoors, and all sales are final, with no cancellations or refunds.

One practical note that will catch people out: D23 says there is no on-site parking for this event at Disney's Contemporary Resort, and directs attendees to park at the Transportation and Ticket Center and take a bus or the monorail to the venue.

Walt Disney World turns 55 on October 1, so the panel lands three days into the anniversary window.
