Tonight is the Final Performance of Universal's Horror Make-Up Show After Nearly 36 Years: Wristband-Only Access at the Pantages Theater Before the "Reimagining"
If you have ever watched a Universal Studios Florida performer flash a fake knife across a volunteer's arm, spill stage blood on cue, and grin while the audience groans in unison, you have at least a passing memory of Universal's Horror Make-Up Show. After nearly 36 years of that exact bit (and a hundred variations of it), the show takes its final bow tonight at the Pantages Theater in the Hollywood area of Universal Studios Florida.
Tomorrow, Tuesday May 12, the theater goes dark for what Universal calls a "reimagining." The updated version is expected to debut later this year. Universal has not yet shared specific details on what is changing.

How to see tonight's final show
- Wristband-only access. Universal is distributing wristbands at the theater on a first-come-first-served basis. There is no standby queue.
- Get there early. The Annual Passholder reserved-seating farewell window ran May 4 through yesterday (May 10), so today is the last day for the general public. Expect Hollywood-area lines to form well before the final showtime.
- The theater is in the Hollywood area of Universal Studios Florida, near Mel's Drive-In. Hollywood is the first area you enter through the front gates, so the theater is a short walk in from the turnstiles.
- Soak in the bit. The volunteer knife gag and the fake-blood reveal are going to land different one last time.
The show's history
Horror Make-Up Show opened with Universal Studios Florida in 1990 (soft open May 1, official June 7), making it one of only two opening-day attractions from 1990 still operating today (the other is E.T. Adventure). It was inspired by The Land of a Thousand Faces, a Universal Studios Hollywood show that ran from 1975 to 1980, and brought that show's combination of practical-effects demos plus comedic riffing east to Orlando.
The format hasn't changed dramatically over those decades. A rotating pair of performers, playing fictional Universal makeup-effects technicians, walk the audience through prosthetic demonstrations: latex appliances, bladder rigs, full-face transformations. They pull a volunteer from the audience for the famous knife-and-fake-blood gag. They riff. They make horror movie history jokes. The runtime sits at a tight 25 minutes.

What's coming back
Universal hasn't shared show details beyond confirming the closure and a "later this year" reopening window, and no specific month has been announced. Several outlets have speculated about IPs that might anchor the reimagining (Blumhouse properties, Universal Monsters refreshes, recent horror franchise IP), but those are speculation, not announced.
What appears likely: the new show will reuse the same Pantages Theater venue (Universal has framed this as a temporary closure of that theater). Specific format details, runtime, and tone of the reimagining have not been announced.
Quick planner notes
- Final show is tonight. Theater goes dark tomorrow. There's no "if you miss tonight, come back tomorrow morning" option here.
- Wristbands distributed first-come-first-served. No standby line, no virtual queue, no reservation system. Get to the Hollywood area as early as you can.
- The new show returns later this year. Universal hasn't committed to a specific month. Watch the Universal Orlando press room and Inside Universal for announcements.
- Mystic Fountain is rumored to close Friday May 15. If you're visiting Universal this week, you can stack a Make-Up Show farewell tonight with a Mystic Fountain visit later in the week (the rumored closure is per Annual Passholder group reports; Universal has not officially confirmed).
- Volcano Bay Nights returns Sunday May 17. If you want to keep building this week's Universal trip, the night event continues on select nights through August 21.
