Carousel of Progress has always been a show about one family living through decades of change. Now one of its voices gets to skip ahead two generations herself.

Walt Disney Imagineering announced on Sunday evening, October 4, that Debi Derryberry, who voiced Patricia, the daughter, in the previous version of Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress, is coming back for the reimagined show. Her new role is Grandmother.

"A familiar voice is returning to Carousel of Progress," Imagineering's post began, as quoted by WDW News Today, adding that Derryberry "is taking on a new role as Grandmother next year at Walt Disney World."

From Patricia to Grandma

WDW News Today describes Derryberry as a prolific voice actor and says she played Patricia, or Patty, the family's daughter, in the attraction's last version. Imagineering shared photos of her back at the microphone, recording the new part.

WDWMagic calls it a casting choice "that carries a certain fitting logic for an attraction built around the passage of time and the evolution of family life." The daughter from the last show is now the grandmother in the next one.

Where Grandma shows up

BlogMickey notes Disney has not yet specified where Grandmother is heard. It points to concept art for the New Year's Eve 1999 act showing Grandma and Grandpa ringing in the new year from a separate room, and says Grandma quietly switches the TV to her wrestling match once Grandpa dozes off. BlogMickey says Grandma also appears in concept art for the new finale.

BlogMickey also reports that the whole family, John and Sarah included, will be back, with Disney refreshing the animatronics rather than replacing the characters. Derryberry joins a voice cast Disney began announcing at D23 in August, when it named Disney Legend Jamie Lee Curtis and Emmy winner Bryan Cranston as the voices of Sarah and John, the mother and father.

The new show, in brief

Carousel of Progress closed after its final day of the old show on July 5, and the reimagined version is due back in Tomorrowland in late spring 2027, with no exact date yet. As WDWMagic lays it out, the new show opens with an Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney, then runs four acts:

  • Act 1: summer 1969, with the family watching the Apollo moon landing
  • Act 2: Halloween night, 1985, with Sarah as the focus of a scene for the first time
  • Act 3: New Year's Eve, 1999
  • Act 4: the future, with a helpful robot and space travel

So here is the question for longtime riders: does hearing Patricia's voice come out of Grandma make the new show feel more like home, or are you just waiting to hear what Jamie Lee Curtis does with Sarah?
