A Tower Crane Appears to Be Rising at Magic Kingdom's Piston Peak, the First Sign the Cars Land Is About to Go Vertical

The dirt lot behind Frontierland has a new landmark. On July 25, Blog Mickey photographed what appears to be the first section of a tower crane standing at the Piston Peak National Park construction site at Magic Kingdom, the Cars-themed land rising where Rivers of America used to flow.

Why the crane is a big deal

For most of this year the site has been an exercise in moving earth. Crews have been shaping and grading the land and burying the underground pipes that will run the new area, and a tall concrete retaining wall now runs along the southern edge of the site. Blog Mickey reports that the crane base is ringed by formwork and waiting on a concrete pour, and that tower cranes like this one rise section by section. In plain terms, the ground work is mostly done and the vertical build is next.

One caveat worth keeping in mind: Disney has not confirmed the crane or said anything about the milestone, and there is still no official opening date. Everything here comes from what construction watchers can see from nearby.

What Piston Peak National Park is

Disney officially named the land Piston Peak National Park in a Disney Parks Blog reveal on June 3, 2025, calling it part of "the largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom." The setting is a national park in the Disney and Pixar Cars universe, complete with a visitor lodge, a Ranger HQ, geysers, and mountain trails. Two rides are planned, both going in on land next to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: a thrilling off-road rally race through the mountains, and a smaller family-friendly attraction that even little racers can enjoy. Disney has not released names for either ride.

The Cars connection is having a moment

The timing lines up with a Cars anniversary. The original 2006 film is heading back to theaters in September 2026 to mark its 20th birthday, so the franchise will be in front of audiences again right as its Magic Kingdom home starts to take shape. Piston Peak is going in on the former site of the Rivers of America, the waterway that once wrapped around Tom Sawyer Island before it closed for this project, which is why the Frontierland waterfront has been walled off for more than a year.

For now, the story is a single blue crane section against the skyline. If the pattern holds, there will be a lot more steel to watch in the weeks ahead.

Construction walls now wrap the closed Westward Ho Refreshments kiosk in Magic Kingdom's Frontierland, and WDW News Today reports the walls will eventually be moved forward into the existing riverwalk area, with a temporary pedestrian pathway installed along the promenade for parade viewing during years of expected construction for Piston Peak National Park. The churro cart has already relocated near Frontier Trading Post, and WDW News Today counted two popcorn stands in new spots.
