Epic Universe's Celestial Goodnight Is Running Without Its Fireworks, and Universal Can't Yet Say When They Come Back

The big finish is missing. Universal Celestial Goodnight, the nighttime show that added a fireworks finale to Epic Universe in July, played without fireworks on Monday, September 14, and Universal has now confirmed the fireworks are off for the time being.

Universal's confirmation came in a reply on X rather than in any announcement we could find. A guest posting as @WDWSteve asked the #AskUniversal hashtag what had happened to "all those big fireworks that were behind the hotel," and the official @UniversalORL account answered on September 15:

"Hi Steve, the fireworks portion of Universal Celestial Goodnight is temporarily unavailable as we work to resolve a technical issue. We apologize for any inconvenience, and will be sure to share your feedback."

What Universal has and has not said

• What is out: the fireworks portion of the show. Universal's reply attributes it to "a technical issue" and does not say what failed, or when the fireworks stopped running.
• When it comes back: unknown. When a second user, @steakandhash, asked when the fireworks would resume, Universal replied that "this information is not available at this time" and invited a direct message for updates.
• The word Universal used: "temporarily." Nothing in either reply suggests the fireworks are being dropped for good.
• How guests found out: according to WDW News Today, the guest said there was no announcement over the PA and no notification in the Universal Orlando app that the fireworks would not happen that night.

As of this writing we have not found a notice about the fireworks on Universal's press site or its Discover Universal blog.

Monday was not the first night without them

Universal did not say how long the fireworks have been out, but they were already missing in early September. Theme park photographer bioreconstruct, whose aerial photos of Orlando construction are widely republished, wrote on Bluesky on the night of September 1: "Only Universal knows why, but the show has been absent of fireworks for weeks."

A second post on September 5 paired an August 1 aerial of what it called "the dormant fireworks launch site for Epic Universe" with the line that "fireworks haven't been part of the nightly Celestial Goodnight show for several weeks."

That is one observer rather than an official timeline, and neither post gives a start date. What the posts do suggest is that the gap predates Monday by weeks, and that the first public word from Universal we could find came only after a guest asked on X this week.

Why the fireworks matter here

Epic Universe opened in May 2025 without a regular fireworks show. Its nightly show was the Cosmos Fountain Show, which WDW News Today says much of Celestial Goodnight was built on. WDW News Today also reports that fireworks were tested at the park before opening but did not become part of the nightly show until this July.

Universal announced the show on June 15 and debuted it on Tuesday, July 7. Its own press release promised "a spectacular fireworks finale that will illuminate the nighttime sky," and described the show as a tribute to the characters and adventures found within the park's portals, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, How to Train Your Dragon - Isle of Berk, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Ministry of Magic and Dark Universe, staged with "nearly 600 synchronized light fixtures, over 350 larger-than-life fountains, and seven million LED lights." The July 7 release said the show runs "nightly at park close."

Universal scoped its reply to "the fireworks portion," and WDW News Today reports the show still performed on Monday night, so the fountains, lighting and score appear to be running as normal. What is missing is the part Universal's own release called a "jaw-dropping fireworks display."

If you are going soon

The timing is awkward. Universal Nights, the park's after-hours party, now spans five dates: Saturday, October 3, Saturday, October 17, Saturday, October 24, Friday, November 6 and Friday, November 20. Universal's July 7 release announced the first two and pitched arriving as early as 7 p.m. to see Universal Celestial Goodnight before the event starts at 9; Universal added the other three dates on September 2, and October 17 is sold out. Universal has not said whether the fireworks will be back by then.

Our take: if the fireworks are the reason you are staying to park close, it is worth asking Universal directly before you plan the night around them, since the only public confirmation so far has been replies to individual guests.
