Epic Universe is closing at 8 p.m. for nearly all of September, which pulls Universal Celestial Goodnight into twilight

Universal Epic Universe spent the summer closing at 9 p.m. In September it will mostly be closing at 8. WDW News Today spotted the change on the park calendar on Monday, and the knock-on effect is the interesting part: the park's new nighttime spectacular runs at park close, so it moves an hour earlier too.

The new September calendar: Epic Universe will close at 8 p.m. on September 1 through 22, September 24 through 28, and September 30. That is 28 of the month's 30 days. The two exceptions run in opposite directions: September 23 holds at 9 p.m., and September 29 closes early at 6 p.m. Opening time is unchanged at 10 a.m. throughout the month.

What it does to the show: Universal Celestial Goodnight debuted on July 7 and, per Universal's own announcement, runs nightly at park close. An 8 p.m. close in September means the show, and its fireworks finale, land around 8 p.m. rather than 9, which matters for a spectacle built on lights, water and fireworks. Sunset in Orlando is around 7:48 p.m. on September 1, and twilight lingers past 8 p.m. for the first week and a half of the month, so the earliest nights will be racing the daylight.

What you would be watching: Universal describes a show that "transforms Celestial Park into a breathtaking spectacle," staged in the park's central hub and built on nearly 600 synchronized light fixtures, more than 350 fountains and seven million LED lights, with a fireworks finale. The show draws on SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, How to Train Your Dragon - Isle of Berk, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Ministry of Magic and Dark Universe.

The timing is hard to miss, but read it carefully: The trimmed hours surfaced four days after Comcast told investors that "attendance across the broader Orlando market began to soften in June, and that trend has continued into the third quarter." The sentence immediately before that one drew a line around this park specifically. "Epic Universe continues to perform well and is delivering the strong guest response we expected," co-CEO Michael Cavanagh said in the same prepared remarks. Later, in the analyst question session, Cavanagh said Epic is "driving higher per capita spend." So the softness was pinned on the Orlando market, not on Epic. Universal has not issued any statement about the hours change, and no executive has been quoted on it. The calendar simply updated. Treat this as a data point rather than a verdict.

October is still blank: As of WDW News Today's report, park hours had not been published for October at all. That is a little odd, because Universal has already announced two October event dates at the park. Universal Nights, the park's after-hours event, debuts on Saturday, October 3 and returns Saturday, October 17, running 9 p.m. to midnight with entry as early as 7 p.m. Tickets go on sale August 13, starting at $179.99 plus tax per person.

Not the Halloween explanation: Halloween Horror Nights 35 runs select nights from August 28 through November 1 at Universal Studios Florida, a different park across the resort. It starts before the Epic Universe hours change takes effect, and Universal has not connected the two.

Planning around it: If you have a September Epic Universe day on the books and the nighttime show is the reason, check your specific date on the official calendar. An 8 p.m. close changes how you spend the afternoon, and September 29 in particular closes at 6 p.m., two hours earlier than the month's usual 8 p.m.

Islands of Adventure stays open until 9 that same night, and October 10 is not one of the announced Universal Nights dates.
