Peter Pan's Flight Sat Closed About 27 Hours at Magic Kingdom, and Disney Has Not Said Why

One of Magic Kingdom's best known dark rides spent a full day and a night sitting still. Peter Pan's Flight went down just before noon on Monday, September 21, stayed closed through the rest of that operating day, never opened with the park on Tuesday morning, and finally came back at 3:15pm on Tuesday, September 22.

Count it out and that is about 27 hours on the clock, roughly 17 of them inside posted park hours, for a ride Inside the Magic calls "one of Magic Kingdom's most popular classic attractions." Disney announced no refurbishment for any of it.

Hour by hour

WDWMagic laid out the timeline across both days. Its report says the ride "closed yesterday, September 21, just before noon" and that "it stayed closed for the rest of the day, through Magic Kingdom's 11pm closing time."

Tuesday morning brought no relief at rope drop. "This morning, September 22, Peter Pan's Flight did not reopen with the rest of the park," the outlet wrote, adding that "as of 1:15pm today, the attraction remains closed." WDWMagic added an update line to the same story, "Update 3:15pm: Peter Pan's Flight has reopened," and its operator account told forum readers: "Its just reopened as of 3:15pm."

On the cause, WDWMagic was blunt: "Disney has not shared details on what caused the closure or when guests can expect the ride to reopen."

This was not planned work

Inside the Magic reported Tuesday that Disney "still lists Peter Pan's Flight as an operating Magic Kingdom attraction, and its official attraction page continues to display regular operating hours," and that Disney "has not announced a refurbishment, permanent closure or major project involving the ride." So this was unplanned downtime rather than scheduled work.

The timing made it sting

Tuesday, September 22 was a Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party night, and a sold out one. Magic Kingdom ran 9:00am to 6:00pm for day guests, with Early Theme Park Entry from 8:30am for guests staying at Disney Resort hotels and select other hotels. A regular ticket holder on Tuesday therefore had a nine hour day in the park, and Peter Pan's Flight did not come back until there were two hours and 45 minutes left on the clock.

Hopscotch outside the queue

With the ride dark, something else turned up outside it. Inside the Magic reported that a guest's photo posted on X showed hopscotch set up near the attraction. The guest, posting as @CoasterK24 on Tuesday, wrote: "Now we got hopscotch! Approaching hour 27 of being down."

Inside the Magic noted the diversion "is certainly not a replacement for flying over London aboard a pirate ship," but said it "gives guests something to do in the area while one of Fantasyland's biggest attractions remains unavailable."

Where it stands

Peter Pan's Flight is open again as of Tuesday afternoon. Disney has not explained the closure, and with no refurbishment notice attached to it, there is nothing official to point to on why a Fantasyland headliner sat still for more than a day.
