Skirts Are Out at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort as New Cast Member Costumes Roll Out in Pants Only

The Polynesian Village Resort has a new look this week, and it comes with one fewer option. Disney is rolling out new cast member costumes across the resort, and according to WDW News Today, none of them includes a skirt.

"As we've seen at some other locations, skirts are no longer an option and all Cast Members now wear pants," WDWNT reported on Monday morning, October 26, after several cast members posed for photos in the new looks.

Quick facts: New costumes are rolling out at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort. Every new costume WDWNT saw is a button-up shirt with khaki pants. According to cast members who spoke to WDWNT, the switch started Sunday, October 25, and every cast member at the resort is due for a new look. No reason for the change has been reported.

What the new costumes look like

WDWNT says all of the new costumes pair a button-up shirt with khakis, and the shirt changes by role:

  • Bellhops: one in a blue-green shirt and one in an orange-red shirt, both with a leafy pattern on one half.
  • Front desk: a teal blue top with khakis and an orange patterned scarf. The old front desk look was a red top, worn with either pants or a skirt.
  • BouTiki: either a teal blue shirt or a white shirt striped in light blue across the chest. The shop's old costume was a floral shirt, with a choice of pants or a skirt.

Who has not switched yet

Not every location has changed over. Cast members at Capt. Cook's were still in the Moana-inspired outfits introduced in 2021, though WDWNT says they "may be getting new costumes as well." The resort's pool bar cast members received generic costumes in 2021, and WDWNT did not say whether those are changing.

How this fits Disney's 2021 costume rules

In 2021, Disney removed gender-specific language from its "Disney Look" appearance guidelines, and as Inside the Magic summarized it, "Employees of all genders are also allowed to wear any costume combination available at their location." A costume set that only comes with pants means no cast member at that location can choose a skirt.

Disney is not dropping skirts everywhere, though. WDWNT points to Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, where cast members "all now wear pants or shorts," but also notes that Emporium cast members were issued new costumes in 2024 that still include a skirt option. Neither outlet reported a reason for the change or cited any announcement from Disney.
