Oversight District Seeks a Three-Year Permit Extension for the World Drive Widening Past Magic Kingdom

Drivers heading to Magic Kingdom and its monorail resorts have been rolling past this roadwork for a while now. The agency in charge of the road has asked the state for three more years on its permit to finish the job.

On Monday, November 2, the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD), which manages the project, asked the South Florida Water Management District to extend its World Drive North Phase 3 permit by three years. The current permit expires December 2, 2026. WDWMagic and WDW News Today both report that the request would move that deadline to December 2, 2029.

What the district is asking for

The request letter, as quoted by Blog Mickey, says the district "is requesting a time extension for the permit of three years to complete construction and a minor modification."

WDWMagic reports that the letter was prepared by TLP Engineering Consultants for CFTOD. Blog Mickey adds one wrinkle: the application form itself repeats the extension request without naming a specific new end date. The December 2, 2029 date comes from WDWMagic's and WDW News Today's reading of the filing.

A permit deadline is not a promise that crews will be out there until 2029. It is the legal window to finish. But it tells you the district does not expect to be done by this December.

Where the work stands, per the filing

  • The bulk of the utility work along the corridor is finished.
  • Crews are now on the last roundabout and the paving for the final stretches.
  • The filing puts the start of landscaping and area development in late 2027.

That last line is the one WDWMagic says is driving the request for three more years. Blog Mickey reported in March that the project's completion date had already moved from September 30, 2026 to December 21, 2027, roughly a 15-month slip.

What World Drive North Phase 3 covers

According to WDWMagic, Phase 3 covers World Drive from south of Seven Seas Drive up to Maple Road. On the filing's map, the road hugs the Magic Kingdom parking lot, then passes Disney's Polynesian Village Resort and Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, with roundabouts spaced along the way, one of them serving the Grand Floridian's entrance. World Drive Phase 2 meets it at the southern end, and the Floridian Way project at the northern end.

Blog Mickey says crews still have the third of the corridor's three planned roundabouts, near the Magic Kingdom parking lot, left to build. The first two roundabouts started carrying traffic on August 10. When it is all finished, Blog Mickey says, the road should be a four-lane divided roadway.

If you have been driving to the Grand Floridian lately, you have already lived through part of this. We covered the new entrance set for September 10 and the direct turn-in off the southern roundabout coming back on October 19.

The minor modification: some old road stays

The second part of the request is about pavement. WDWMagic reports that the original plans had 0.82 acres of the old Floridian Way pavement coming out, and that CFTOD now proposes keeping 0.16 acres of that. WDWMagic and Blog Mickey both say the filing does not explain why. Blog Mickey describes the piece that stays as a narrow strip roughly 280 feet long on the plan sheet.

Per Blog Mickey, the letter says the total project area stays the same, there are no floodplain or wetland impacts, and the original design and stormwater treatment system do not change. WDWMagic adds that, according to the engineers, the adjacent stormwater pond has enough capacity for the runoff without changes.

What it means for your trip

The filing itself does not change anything you will drive through. Expect the construction zone along World Drive and Floridian Way to stay part of the drive to Magic Kingdom and the monorail resorts into late 2027 at least, which is when the filing says landscaping is expected to start. Have you found the roundabouts easier or harder than the old route?
