Monstropolis Opens in 2027 Without Its Only Ride, and Disney Did Not Say When the Door Coaster Follows

Disney spent Saturday's D23 parks showcase filling in Monstropolis, the Monsters, Inc. land going up on the former Grand Avenue and Muppets Courtyard corner of Disney's Hollywood Studios. It named the theater, named the restaurants, put a Randy Newman song in the middle of it, and finally attached a year: 2027.

In the same sentence, it took the ride out of that year. Disney's framing was that while work continues on the door coaster, the rest of Monstropolis opens in 2027. The door coaster is the land's only announced ride. Everything Disney put in the 2027 column is a theater show, two places to eat and a place to shop.

What Disney actually named

The land is set after the events of the film, once Monstropolis has switched from screams to laughter for power. The occasion is H.U.M.A.N. Day, which Disney spells out as Humans Understanding Monsters Are Nice, and the monsters have stood up a Department of Human Relations to handle the visitors. That is the excuse for you being there.

The centerpiece is the Glob Theater, and the show inside it is called Welcome to Monstropolis, hosted by Mike and Sulley. The title song was written by Randy Newman, and Disney says it is the first song Newman has composed specifically for a Disney theme park. Newman's Pixar scores have played in Disney parks for years, so the claim is about an original commission rather than a first appearance.

That show also resolves something that has been vague in Disney's own materials since early 2025. Disney had been listing a Monsters, Inc. theatrical experience among the land's attractions without a name, a format or a venue, and separately naming the Glob Theater as a landmark building. Those are now the same thing.

On the dining side:

• Harryhausen's is the table service restaurant, the sushi place from Mike and Celia's date in the film. Disney says it will have an Audio-Animatronics sushi chef working the counter, an octopus using several tentacles at once to assemble monster sized orders.
• Archie's Scare Pig Pizza is the quick service option, themed to Monsters University campus life and named for Archie the Scare Pig, the rival Fear Tech mascot Mike steals in Monsters University.
• The Monsters University Alumni Club sits next door to Archie's as a companion dining space, with a Scarer's Club section honoring the school's legendary graduates. Disney described it as adjacent to Archie's rather than as a separate restaurant, so how it is booked and operated is still an open question.

The shop is the Scareporium, positioned as the place monsters sell souvenirs to visiting humans.

The coaster is the part with no date

What Disney did not do is attach a number to the ride. Not a date, not a season, not a year.

This is worth stating carefully, because it is easy to read as a delay and it is not one. Disney had never given the door coaster a public opening date to miss. What changed at D23 is that the land around it got a year and the coaster did not, which is the first time the two have been formally split.

The technical claims are still the ones Disney has been making since 2024 and 2025, repeated at D23 with a look at the loading area: it will be the first suspended coaster at a Disney park, riders get lifted 40 feet in about four seconds by the ceiling mounted rig, and the launch runs into the door vault. Disney presenters put the friendlier spin on the split, which is that the land gets an expansion moment after it opens.

How this squares with the construction site

Nothing about the phasing contradicts what has been visible over the fence. We reported on August 11 that the coaster's M shaped load station had gone up in steel, visible from the Hollywood Studios parking lot, and in July that the first ride scene inside the building was taking shape before being enclosed. A coaster at that stage in mid 2026 is not obviously a 2027 opening once you add track installation, ride vehicle manufacturing, programming and testing.

The land's public facing buildings are further along. That is the ordinary shape of these projects, and it is also the shape that makes a phased opening possible: the streets, the theater and the kitchens can be finished and staffed while the ride building is still a construction site behind them.

A land opening without a ride is unusual, even recently

Disney has opened lands with a headliner missing before. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opened at Hollywood Studios on August 29, 2019 with Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run running and Rise of the Resistance still unfinished, and Rise did not open until December 5 that year. Toy Story Land and Pandora both opened with their full ride lineups.

The difference here is that Galaxy's Edge still opened with a ride. On what Disney has announced, Monstropolis in 2027 opens with a theater show as its only attraction. Whether that reads as a soft opening of a street or as a real land opening is going to depend a lot on how Disney markets it, and Disney has not said which it considers this to be.

What this means if you are planning

If you are looking at 2027 Hollywood Studios trips, treat Monstropolis as new theming, a show and two restaurants, and do not build a day around the coaster. There is no basis yet for guessing when it opens. Disney's own history with this kind of split, Rise of the Resistance aside, does not give a reliable interval to extrapolate from.

The practical thing to watch is dining reservations. Harryhausen's will be the headline booking in the land, and recent Disney World openings set the expectation: Roundup Rodeo BBQ at Hollywood Studios and Space 220 at EPCOT both spent their opening stretch effectively impossible to book. If that repeats, the availability window is the hard part of a 2027 Monstropolis visit, not the ride that is not open.
