Olivia's Cafe Took Every Member Photo Off Its Walls, and the Pictures Now Live in 16 Albums at Old Key West's Community Hall

For years, eating at Olivia's Cafe meant eating under other people's vacations. Framed snapshots of Disney Vacation Club members climbed the walls of the Old Key West restaurant, frame against frame, above the white wainscoting.

Those walls are bare of family photos now. WDW News Today reported on September 12 that the removal Disney first described in February "is complete, and all Member photos are now gone from the space."

What is on the walls instead

The spaces that held the photos now carry general nautical and Florida Keys decor. WDW News Today lists a ship's wheel, anchors, fish and coastal signs, plus an Olivia's Cafe sign that lists Olivia Farnsworth as proprietor.

Where the photos went

The pictures moved to nearby Conch Flats Community Hall, the resort's recreation space. They have been gathered into albums with covers reading "Family Album: Meet Our Members!" and branded for Disney Vacation Club. WDW News Today counted "Sixteen albums" in and on top of a small bookshelf, set between two chairs.

This is the plan Disney laid out in February, when it closed part of the dining room for what it called routine maintenance. The statement WDW News Today published then said the collection, "some of which have aged or begun to fade over the years," would be "thoughtfully relocated to new albums at Conch Flats Community Hall," so the memories would stay "accessible for Members and Guests to enjoy for years to come." In February, WDW News Today said any guest can use the hall, every day from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Members can still send one in

Submissions are still being taken. A framed flyer on top of the bookshelf reads: "Disney Vacation Club® Members who call Disney's Old Key West 'home' can preserve their special Member memories for possible inclusion in the Resort's photo albums, located here inside Conch Flats Community Hall!"

Its QR code leads to a Disney Vacation Club page for Old Key West. According to WDW News Today, members email their photo in, and each person in the picture needs a signed release form. The key word on the flyer is "possible": a submitted photo is not promised a spot in an album.

A little less home?

Disney kept the pictures rather than throwing them out, and by its own account some of the prints had aged or begun to fade. Still, something was lost when they came down. WDW News Today, while welcoming the albums, wrote that the original display gave Old Key West "a kind of authenticity" and, for many families, "a true sense of 'home' that few other resorts can match." Flipping through an album on a shelf is a different experience from spotting your own family on the wall over a meal.

It is not the only change coming to Olivia's. As we reported in August, the restaurant serves its last brunch on October 5 before splitting it into separate breakfast and lunch services, while dinner stays the same.

If your family was ever on that wall, the albums at Conch Flats are the first place to go looking.
