Imagineering Is Rebuilding EPCOT's Germany Train Garden, and a Tiny Dreamfinder Showed Up Less Than a Week After D23 Announced His Return

Walt Disney Imagineering posted a set of photos on Friday from the flowerbed beside the Germany pavilion, and by the end of the same day the small figure standing in one of them had become the story.

The Germany Train Garden at EPCOT, the miniature Bavarian village with model trains running through it along the World Showcase promenade, is getting its most substantial refresh in years, and the work is still under way. Imagineering said the display is getting "new magic" from its Imagineers and the Walt Disney World Engineering Services Artist Prep team. What that turned out to mean is a partly rebuilt town square, a Snow White cottage, a construction site that jokes about itself, and a Dreamfinder small enough to fit in your palm.

The town square got a Biergarten clock tower

The buildings around the square have clearly been repainted, and where a large house stood there is now a clock tower and archways modeled on the entrance to Biergarten Restaurant in the real pavilion a few steps away. Tiny planters went in, and the fountain from the real Germany pavilion now has a scale model of its own. The gazebo that hosts the pavilion's live music has been reproduced in miniature too, near the front of the model town.

Beside the tracks sits a miniature construction site, with scaffolding, tiny diggers and a crew of very small workers hard at the job. WDWMagic reports that the little excavators and workers are set among stacks of crates and barrels, with the model track running right past them. The green walls around it carry miniature "Please Pardon Our Pixie Dust" signs, and the small print underneath promises the area "Is Being Refurbished For Your Future Enjoyment."

Snow White moved in

The single biggest addition is probably the cottage from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). It has the iconic yellow thatch roof and a clothesline drying clothes, with a creek running past into a small pond. There is now a mine shaft entrance as well, with a little cart of colorful gems parked beside it. The Evil Queen turns up in her old hag form, on the path that leads down to the cottage. The Huntsman is in the scene too, near the top of one of the photos, with deer scattered around him, and the rocky outcropping where the Queen meets her end has been built in miniature as well, complete with deer and vultures.

There is also an easter egg for a ride that no longer exists. Dr. Grant Seeker, from the now closed DINOSAUR attraction at Disney's Animal Kingdom, appears in a white lab coat, running while holding a dinosaur egg. Another photo catches him glancing back toward several men unpacking crates, one of them big enough to hold a dinosaur head.

And then there is Dreamfinder

A tiny figure in a top hat and blue suit stands outside a dark wood building, Tudor in style with metallic gold detailing. It is Dreamfinder, the character from the original version of Journey Into Imagination, who created Figment with his Dream Mobile and then led guests through the ride alongside him.

The timing is what made people notice. Less than a week earlier at D23, Neil Patrick Harris took the stage in Dreamfinder costume, Figment plush in hand, to announce that the character is coming back in a reimagined Journey Into Imagination With Figment at EPCOT.

Before anyone reads too much into it: Disney Tourist Blog says it confirmed with Disney that the D23 news is a genuine reimagining of Journey Into Imagination that will bring back Dreamfinder and Figment, so the train garden figure is not the announced return. The site adds that the train garden team had likely been working on this for months without knowing the Dreamfinder announcement was coming. So it is a coincidence. It is a very good one.

Worth knowing

The trains are G-scale, among the largest sizes used in model railroading, running roughly 1:22.5 to 1:29. The display sits in a flowerbed at the far right end of the Germany pavilion, right on the World Showcase promenade. It began life as a seasonal Flower and Garden Festival installation, proved popular enough with guests to stay for good, and its decorations now get swapped out for each festival through the year.

Which, given the miniature refurbishment walls now standing in it, means a display that is itself still under construction is currently hosting its own smaller construction site.
