Universal Orlando Planning Guide

The Complete Guide to Universal Express Pass

Epic Universe changed the whole playbook. Volcano Bay just retired TapuTapu. Hagrid's finally joined Express. And the "stay on-site, get free Express" hack still exists — but only at three very specific hotels, and definitely not the shiny new one at Epic. Here's exactly how every product works in 2026.

The lineup

The products, at a glance

Universal sells three distinct paid line-skipping products plus a brand-new in-app pay-per-ride option. Critically: the Express Pass you buy for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure is a completely separate entitlement from Epic Universe Express. Buying one does not include the other.

Universal Express Now (in-app, pay-per-ride)

Added to the Universal Orlando Resort app in 2025: buy a single Express entry for ~$25 per ride once you're already inside the park. Great for "I just need one more Hagrid's ride before the flight" moments — terrible value if you're using it 4+ times.

Plus standby queues (free) and Single Rider lines at many headliners (also free, often nearly as fast as Express).

The originals

Universal Studios Florida & Islands of Adventure

Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure share the same Express Pass ecosystem. You pick single-park or park-to-park, one-time or Unlimited. Both parks accept each other's park-to-park Express — including on Hogwarts Express between King's Cross and Hogsmeade.

Legacy-parks Express pricing (2026)

Universal's fourth park

Epic Universe Express

Separate ecosystem

Epic Universe opened May 22, 2025 with its own Express Pass product — and the rules are genuinely different. There's no Unlimited tier, no park-to-park combination with the legacy parks, and exactly one attraction permanently excluded from Express: Dragon Racer's Rally.

Epic Universe Express pricing (2026)

Per guest, per day. Dynamic pricing — typical midweek range $190–$270, peak weekends and holidays push past $300.

What's included at Epic Universe

Celestial Park

Hub land

    Dual-launch coaster
  • Constellation Carousel
    Family flat ride

Super Nintendo World

All three attractions now Express-eligible

  • Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge
    Interactive AR ride

Wizarding World — Ministry of Magic

Express-eligible as of Aug 22, 2025

  • Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry
Added to Express Aug 22, 2025

Battle at the Ministry was standby-only at opening; Universal added it to Express on the same day as Mine-Cart Madness once capacity stabilized.

How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk

⚠️ Contains the one permanent exclusion

  • Hiccup's Wing Gliders
    Family coaster
  • Dragon Racer's Rally
No Express — low-capacity ride, standby only
  • Fyre Drill
    Interactive water ride

Dark Universe

Fully Express-friendly

  • Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment
    Flagship dark ride
  • Curse of the Werewolf
    Family spinning coaster

The one exclusion: Dragon Racer's Rally

Every other Epic Universe attraction accepts Express as of 2026. Dragon Racer's Rally is the exception — a low-capacity spinning ride in the Isle of Berk area with no separate Express queue. Standby only, every day. Plan to visit it during the first 45 minutes of the morning or near park close when waits are shortest.

The real hack

Hotels that include Express

This is the single biggest Express value at Universal: three Premier-tier hotels include Unlimited Express Pass for every registered guest, every day of your stay, at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. For a family of four on a 3-night stay, that perk is worth roughly $2,000–$4,000 during peak season — often more than the hotel itself.

Premier tier · Unlimited Express included

Three hotels. Every guest. Legacy parks only.

Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

Italian-villa resort on a lagoon

Hard Rock Hotel

Rock-and-roll vibes, pool with beach entry

Loews Royal Pacific Resort

South Pacific theme, tends to be cheapest Premier

  • Valid from the moment of check-in through end of operating hours on check-out day — effectively 2 park days on a 1-night stay.
  • Covers every registered guest on the reservation, up to standard room occupancy.
  • Access via room key card — tap at the Express entrance alongside your park ticket. Digital room key via the app also works.
  • Covers Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure only. Does NOT include Epic Universe or Volcano Bay Express.
Helios Grand · Common misconception

The Epic Universe hotel does not include Express

Helios Grand is Epic Universe's stunning on-site hotel and the first resort in Universal's new "Signature Collection" umbrella — but it is not in the Premier sub-tier, and it does not include complimentary Express Pass at any park.

To repeat: a Helios Grand room key will not open Express lines at any Universal park.

This is the most expensive misunderstanding of 2026. If you want Express at Epic Universe, at Universal Studios Florida, or at Islands of Adventure from a Helios Grand stay — you are buying it à la carte, same as anyone else.

What Helios Grand actually gives you:

  • Early Park Admission to all four parks — same 1-hour window as every other on-site hotel.
  • A private hotel-to-park entrance directly into Epic Universe, steps from the Ministry of Magic portal. This is the real perk — a geographic head start during Early Park Admission that nobody else has.
  • Resort-wide charging, complimentary transportation to the legacy parks, in-room package delivery.
  • Luxury-tier rooms, pool, and dining — a genuinely beautiful hotel on its own merits.

If Express at the legacy parks is your priority, a 1-night stay at Royal Pacific (cheapest Premier) can cost less than the Helios Grand rate, include free Unlimited Express, and let you pay for Epic Universe Express on your Epic day.

All other on-site hotels · No Express included

These hotels give you Early Park Admission but no Express Pass:

Universal Helios Grand Hotel
Loews Sapphire Falls Resort
Universal's Aventura Hotel
Universal's Cabana Bay Beach Resort
Endless Summer — Surfside Inn & Suites
Endless Summer — Dockside Inn & Suites
Universal Stella Nova Resort
Universal Terra Luna Resort

Every on-site hotel except the three Premier-tier properties falls into this bucket — including Helios Grand, Sapphire Falls, and the Epic Universe-adjacent value resorts (Stella Nova and Terra Luna).

The water park

Volcano Bay — the 2026 changes

Everything changed

Volcano Bay rewrote its entire queue system in late 2025. If you last visited before October 2025, everything you remember is now wrong:

Gone as of October 1, 2025

TapuTapu virtual line

The waterproof wristband virtual-queue system that defined Volcano Bay since opening is discontinued. Universal retired it after nearly a decade — the hardware was aging and the system struggled with Epic Universe-era crowd patterns.

New as of October 2025

Standby queues + paid Express

Volcano Bay now uses standard standby queues on every slide. Universal also introduced a paid Volcano Bay Express Pass — one priority entry per participating slide, similar to the dry-park Express Pass model.

Heads up

Volcano Bay closes for a major refurbishment Oct 26, 2026 – Mar 24, 2027.

If your 2026 trip falls in that window, Volcano Bay won't be available at all. If you want to visit before the closure, plan for early-to-mid October or earlier.

The new Volcano Bay Express Pass is sold per-day and prices similarly to the legacy-park single-use Express tier. No Unlimited tier at Volcano Bay; no hotel-included benefit covers it.

The mechanics

How it actually works

Universal's Express system is mercifully simpler than Disney's — no 7 AM scramble, no booking windows, no refresh game. But there are a few mechanics worth knowing.

  1. 1

Your Express lives on your ticket (or room key)

Paid Express is loaded onto your park admission ticket. Hotel-included Express is loaded onto your room key card or digital key in the Universal Orlando Resort app. You tap both your ticket and your Express media at the attraction entrance.

  2. 2

Find the Express lane, tap, ride

Every Express-eligible attraction has a clearly marked Express Pass lane. Scan at the touchpoint, walk through the merged queue, board. For one-time Express, the system locks that specific attraction out of further Express scans for the day.

  3. 3

    Typical wait savings

Standby waits of 60–90 minutes typically drop to 5–20 minutes in Express. On peak days with 2+ hour standbys, Express can still run 20–30 minutes — it's a reduction, not a teleporter.

  4. 4

Buy online vs at the gate vs in the app

Prices are the same day-of online vs at the turnstile, but Universal re-prices upward as demand climbs. For peak dates, lock in advance. For slow weekdays, wait and walk up. Mid-day pivot? Open the app — Universal Express Now sells per-ride Express for $25, no pre-purchase needed.

  5. 5

Legacy-park Express ≠ Epic Universe Express

The single most important mechanic. Your Universal Studios Florida + Islands of Adventure Express will not scan at Epic. Your Epic Express will not scan at the legacy parks. Visiting all three? You need both products.

The good stuff

Tips & tricks

Everything below is non-obvious. If you only read one section of this guide, read this one.

#1 most-valuable trick

The "One-Night Premier" stay

The Premier-hotel Express benefit activates on check-in day before you've actually slept there, and remains active until end-of-day on check-out day. That means a single-night stay effectively gives every guest in your room two full days of Unlimited Express at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

  1. 1. Book one night at Royal Pacific (usually the cheapest Premier tier) for a Monday check-in.
  2. 2. Check in as early as the front desk allows on Monday morning — get your room key with Express loaded immediately.
  3. 3. Use Unlimited Express all day Monday and all day Tuesday at the legacy parks.
  4. 4. Compare the total to buying 2 days of Express Unlimited for your whole party — the hotel math often wins, especially for families of 4+.

Only applies at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. Epic Universe Express and Volcano Bay Express are still separate purchases. On peak dates, Premier hotels sell out months in advance — book early.

Free

Single Rider is free Express

  • Nearly as fast as Express on major headliners, sometimes faster.
  • Available on VelociCoaster, Rip Ride Rockit, Hulk, Revenge of the Mummy, Forbidden Journey, Hagrid's, Mario Kart, Stardust Racers.
  • Your party splits up — not ideal for small kids or first-time family experiences, but perfect for re-rides.
  • Universal doesn't charge for Single Rider. It is, genuinely, the best-kept secret at this resort.
Stack

Stack Early Park Admission

  • All on-site hotel guests get 1 hour of Early Park Admission daily — same time for every tier, from Endless Summer Value all the way up to Helios Grand.
  • Use EPA for the ride that doesn't accept Express (Dragon Racer's Rally) — walk-on before the crowds arrive.
  • Save Express for the 11 AM–5 PM standby bloodbath on the big headliners.
  • Helios Grand guests: your edge is the private park entrance, not the EPA clock.
Pro tip

Buy Express in the afternoon

  • Universal discounts the same-day Express tier after 3 PM on many days — morning buyers pay the full day rate.
  • If you're walking in for a night visit or an afternoon-to-close trip, check the price at 2:45 PM before you buy.
  • Also: universalorlando.com occasionally drops prices 10–15% on weekdays 2–3 weeks out — worth checking your date weekly if it's flexible.
  • New in 2025: Universal Express Now in the app lets you buy single-ride Express for $25 once you're already in the park.
Strategy

Park order on a 2-park day

  • Islands of Adventure in the morning — Hagrid's, VelociCoaster, and Forbidden Journey build fastest.
  • Universal Studios Florida in the afternoon/evening — standby tapers after dinner, and USF has better night-time atmosphere.
  • Use Hogwarts Express to park-hop at lunch (requires a 2-park ticket; 2-park Express covers both stations).
  • If Epic is in the mix, do Epic its own full day — never try to split.

Where Express earns its money

Almost always worth it

Islands of Adventure

Highest headliner density on property. Express + Hagrid's + VelociCoaster is the standard peak-day formula.

Usually yes

Epic Universe

Standby explodes after 10 AM. Only Dragon Racer's Rally is excluded — plan to rope-drop that one.

Conditional

Universal Studios Florida

Gringotts, Transformers, and Mummy build waits, but many attractions are shows or walk-ons. Express less essential on slow days.

New for 2026

Volcano Bay

Now sells single-use Express Pass. Visit weekdays before peak summer to avoid the biggest waits.

Quick decision flow

  • Off-site, 1 day, slow season Skip Express. Rope-drop + Single Rider will hit every headliner.
  • Off-site, 1 day, peak season Buy Express Unlimited Park-to-Park. One product covers Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure all day.
  • 3+ day family trip, legacy parks Book a Premier hotel. The Unlimited Express perk beats buying standalone, always.
  • Only going to Epic Universe Helios Grand gets you the private park entrance; budget Epic Express separately if you can't finish with standby.
  • All three parks, one trip Premier hotel (free legacy-park Unlimited Express) + Epic Universe Express on the Epic day. Budget the Epic product separately.
  • Halloween Horror Nights HHN Express is a completely separate product. Budget $100–$300+ for Saturday nights and book early.

Common gotchas

These catch people every single trip. Flag them now so you're not learning at the turnstile.

Legacy Express does not work at Epic Universe.

The single most expensive misunderstanding at Universal right now. Your Universal Studios Florida + Islands of Adventure Express will be refused at Epic's tap readers. You need Epic Universe Express as a separate purchase.

Helios Grand does not include Express Pass — anywhere.

It's Universal's newest luxury resort but it's not a Premier-tier hotel. Staying at Helios Grand gives you Early Park Admission and a private Epic Universe park entrance, but no complimentary Express at any Universal park.

TapuTapu is gone.

If your last Volcano Bay visit was pre-October 2025, note that the wristband virtual line no longer exists. Volcano Bay now uses standard standby queues with an optional paid Express Pass.

Volcano Bay closes for refurbishment late 2026.

Volcano Bay will be closed Oct 26, 2026 – Mar 24, 2027. Don't build a trip around it during that window.

Dragon Racer's Rally is the one permanent Epic exclusion.

Every other Epic Universe attraction — including Mario Kart, Mine-Cart Madness, and Battle at the Ministry — accepts Express as of 2026. Dragon Racer's Rally is the sole holdout; plan to standby it early.

Express doesn't include park admission.

Every Express product is an add-on to a valid ticket. Hotel-included Express still requires you to buy admission separately.

Halloween Horror Nights Express is separate.

Daytime Express and hotel-included Express do NOT work at HHN. HHN Express is its own $100–$300+ product sold per-night, and Saturday slots disappear months in advance.

Even with Express, expect 15–30 minute waits on peak days.

Express is a reduction, not a teleporter. When standby is 120+ minutes, Express can still run 20–30 minutes on the biggest headliners.

Express is nontransferable.

Tied to your ticket or room key card. You can't hand it to someone else once you've used any part of it.
